After succeeding this afternoon with both, installing the SDK and porting "akGIF.datatype.elf" I'm now looking for reliable beta testers for this and future MorphOS projects. If you don't mind to spend some time on real-life testing and bug search, please drop me an email. Thanks! (the MorphOS version does by no means exclude any AOS4 version for the future - I just want to focus on one single platform for now)

Small correction to the facts:
The Warp datatypes *used* to be free - and the akDatatypes *used* to be Shareware. Today it is exactly the opposite way around, talking about what is on Aminet. Once you install the free keyfile, these also are not crippled anymore.
The new PPC versions will be free for now - since I do not operate any business anymore.

Small correction to your opinion:
1. There is no WarpGIF from Oliver Roberts, as far as I know. There is one, but it certainly could not have been compared to akGIF, either (since it was not available at that time).
2. The new akDatatypes will be ppc-native and GCC-compiled, so cannot even be compared to the 68k datatypes anymore. You will have to do a new test.

Last not least:
Just wait and see. And if you do not like them, then simply do not use them.
I also do not care about the MOS/AOS4 wars. There are things I like (and do not like) about either approach. It's simply impossible for a single part-time developer to support two platforms at a time. However, making applications portable will be of value in any case.

In reply to Comment 15 (Andreas Kleinert):
oh, and one addition:

the main reason for the current datatype work is, to get to a stable "platform" which allows for more complex stuff (also, but not limited to other datatypes) like a PPC-native SView-Library.

So, please either be constructive - in form of beta-testing - or simply get back under your stone and shut up for now ;-)

I'm mainly doing all this for my own fun currently. So it's hardly possible to stop me from doing so :-)

That's the right approach, I presume :) Anything new, and any new developments/developers are definitely "nice to have" for MorphOS - the way I think :)

It's not that I don't want to support new software for MorphOS, but MorphOS already comes with a fast and working GIF datatype. I don't see the point in doing another. Maybe datatype development should shift to other images? JPEG2000, LJPEG, and TIFF and its many compressors?

For anyone interested, there's now a Yahoo group for discussions and new beta versions, currently akGIF and akJFIF for MorphOS:

The WarpDatatypes are also redundant under this aspect, AFAIK.

But of course you are correct.
The main reason why I am starting with these is, that I know that they work fine under AOS 68k and Amithlon. This way I can exactly find out which bugs and problems are caused by MorphOS (and there were quite some yet!) and which are the fault of my datatypes. This will lead to a stable, common "datatype skeleton".

The same skeleton also will be the basis for SView5/SVObjects porting.

There's also a chance, that my datatypes will be an improvement over the existing ones, but for this judgement it is too early and it is of course not up to me ;-)

Unfortunately my Pegasos was not for free, but paid with hard-earned money.
I think I've asked for one ~2 years ago but did not get any response. But I cannot find the relevant email anymore.

Uhm, do you mean bugs/problems in your port, or in MorphOS itself? ..if the latter, have you told anyone or atleast documented it so it can get fixed?

Where exactly can MorphOS bugs be reported?
Someone told me, that these may be "known bugs" but I may report anyway.

Well, you have a Pegasos don't you? In that case you should get yourself subscribed to the MLs .. mail the MorphOS support mail in your manual for more info...

..anyway, in the meantime you could always join #morphos on arcnet and tell us about them there (there's always atleast one of us awake)... ;)
