No way. MorphOS is better in most aspects and that is hardly a subject to change, rather the opposite! Stay tuned! :-)

PS.
It's ironic, don't you think? The greatest threat against OS4 - except its own shortcomings - is the lack of functioning hardware that mortals can afford. The Pegasos would be the best commercially available option for OS4, and while it would take an afternoon or so to get OS4 running on the PegasosONE (and perhaps a few weeks after that to get it running on the Pegasos2, provided that it has a real HAL and doesn't have too many Articia "SW bugfixes" (or should we call them "drivers"?) weaved into the fabric all over), it could probably never survive in the shadow of MorphOS. Who would want it? Ironic, huh, OS4 can't live without it, and it can't live with it! Nevertheless I think the best thing for OS4 would be if they kept it away from the Pegasos. Keep it on the A1!

MorphOS is better in most aspects to AmigaOS4 on what grounds?

The greatest threat against OS4 is the lack of functioning hardware that mortals can afford? Are you serious? You're meaning to tell me that the average mortal isn't able to put 75$ US aside each month to purchase an AmigaOne?

i agree with boingballs4all (comment2)
and, while i don't have tryed os4 until now, i know one thing for sure:
morphos really sucks, i've sold my peg...
and genesi, mos team sucks even more.
anyway, the real amiga successor is os4/a1, hyperion bros. just rulez!!
they have the name, they have the source, they have experience, they just are the best thing that happened to amiga theses last 8years.
while ex-phase5 just sux0rz cyberstorm and blizzardppc cards were just shit..
the only one ppc card, but it wasn't good enough.. only badly finished work.
and powerup was just wrong lol.
long live OS4!!!

Ok, one word about 68k, OS4/PPC and MorphOS/PPC. Since you asked for it.

I am SICK about having to maitain half a dozen versions and builds for different CPUs and OS derivates (68000-060, PPC-PowerUP, PPC-WarpUP, PPC-MOS, PPC-...) - not counted the special code cases for gfx-lib 39/40 with out without SetPatch 43, with or without CyberGfx, with our without pic-dt 43 or 43, with or without 3rd party XYZ patches etc. - do you have the slightest idea how difficult proper software testing is under these circumstances?

Having one single code platform again makes things a hell lot of easier. And even in this case you may end up with: versions for 603/604, one version for G3, one for G4, one with AltiVec support, one with MOS 1.x workarounds, ...

So, once AOS4 is ready(*) and the hardware is a affordable, I would not mind to port things to AOS4 again. Starting from a very simple, single MOS codebase.

But the first step is, to get clean GCC- and PPC-proof code and remove all the OS 3.x 68k legacy.

(*) well, send me an AOne for free and I may play with it earlier

I think that is a very sensible policy. IMO many programmers would do well to wait until the AOS4 software and the A1 hardware are more mature. Users should remember that almost all Amiga coders are working for free, and the cost of an A1 comes out of their pocket.

With any luck, things will be much further forward next summer.

Well, any mortal could also afford the ~$29.999 for a dual 2.5GHz G5 Mac, or a SGI render station, or a Boeing747. Just put aside $75 every month for enough time and you are set. ;-)

Face it, the A1 is big, old and crappy, but with an astronomical price.

I wouldn't describe it as "big" - I would prefer a board with more PCI slots. My idea of a big board is the A2000 motherboard.

The A1s sold so far are really development boards sold at what is a very low price for a development board. This would be a high price for a consumer product. The OS is also at the stage when an OS is released for developers, not for consumers (as Hyperion made clear by calling it a developer pre-release).

Unfortunately most Amiga developers do not have a proper development budget, and cannot expect sales to cover the cost of such a board.

Face it, the price isn't that high. And any person that wants an AmigaOne can afford one.

A1200 costed about 500-600e 10 years ago (I recall it was 3000FIM here) and you got full system just without a monitor. Although you could get faster system now (i.e. A1-SE or Peg G3 mobo) you don't always get better games or apps...

By the time you added stuff like a hard drive, more memory, and a (relatively) cheap 030 accelerator to make the A1200 somewhat more suitable for "real" use, it was costing well over $800. I've been there, done that.
