Amigaworld.net is currently down due to hard drive failure.

Everything possible is being done to return the site to normal, however we are unable to give an ETA at this time. In the meantime, the Amigaworld IRC network continues to function via the remaining US and European Amigaworld Servers

They are:-
UK.Amigaworld.Net
US2.Amigaworld.Net
NO.Amigaworld.Net

Updates will continue to be posted here as and when we know.

Update

The server harddrive developed lots of damaged blocks, this caused the server to crash and has corruped lots of data, luckily most of these corruped data files are system files and not website or database files.

The OS has been booted up in Recovery mode and we are currently tar'ing hda3 (18GB) to a remote location using an ssh tunnel (thanks Sibbi). This will take serveral hours.

Once that is done support will replace and partition a new harddrive with the OS installed. Then we can restore hda3 to the new harddrive, and if all goes well we will be back online tomorrow.

Please get that site up and running fast, so no more of your users escapes over the fences to come out here in the real world. They can soil the atmosphere pretty quick, like Toaks just made a great example of in his little meaningless troll-raid some minutes ago (that now seems to be removed, thankfully).

Just because ANN has an a public submission queue doesn't mean that everything that gets posted (and maybe is seen by a few people) needs to stay there.

Maybe Christophe sees this and can give a specific reason why he moderated the post, but frankly, most often we don't really need to justify ourselves because a lot of the crap that we end up removing is so low in value that it would be futile to spend any more time to explain a decision that should/would be obvious to almost anyone.

Also, just as a note, sometimes submissions might remain for a few hours to see if any intelligent comments pop up about it, and if there's just the usual trollfest, it's sometimes better to just remove everything altogether. Christophe is probably more prone to do this than I am, even though I should probably be stricter about it too.

I removed the thread because:
- The intent was to flame / troll / etc
- The author of the thread is one of these guys who make critics about ANN quality while contributing to low quality while changing his nick to post here.
- Such posts have to be limited for everyone productivity and to avoid deteriorating the situation.
- The subject of the post has already been discussed in the previous thread and could be discussed there (if done the right way). No need to have the 10 next threads about presumed GPL violations.

I did not removed the original Amidog thread because I was not the one moderating it to forum. When I found it a large number of comments were made and I thought Amidog would answer sooner than he did.
My name is on the Amidog thread because I removed parts such as "Shame on you Amidog". I would certainly have deleted the Amidog thread anyway if I would have found it unmoderated and sooner than I did.

I have deleted / moderated a large number of bad posts / comments in these last days. It looks that troublemaker are back from vacation after the relative quiet summer we got on ANN.

At the end, i'm quite bored and asked Christian if we could disable anonymous posting for selectable threads.

Before whining about why AmigaWorld is attacked here every time it's mentioned, ask yourself why. Would the same abuse appear if it was Amiga.org, Moobunny, MorphZone or even Genesi's site? Even Amiga.com doesn't incur the same amount of abuse when it goes down. All of these have political values, and haters. None takes quite as much flak.

Now, is that because of an aggressive hate campaign by 'blue trolls'? Or because of the character and actions of certain moderators on AW? Why is AmigaWorld so hated? It wouldn't be anything to do with the fact that it has people just as bad as the blue trolls here moderating it, would it?

Ask yourself that, before trying to get people wiped out of threads. That just stinks of censorship. A bit like ...

Riiiiight. So now we know it's right to crucify individuals like Mr. Roslund and Mr. Hauser, but when someone criticizes an entire camp of developers with the exact same rhetorics that's suddenly inappropriate.

Cristophe: Well, at least you "just saved us guys some time" ;)

I believe the correct term for this behaviour is hypocrisy.

Oh well, sorry for the Offtopicness of these posts. I just did a joke on the incosistency. If you want to discuss further, feel free to send me an email.

Disagreement, even dislike - sure.
But hate?

When someone can muster *hate* for something as trivial as a website covering a certain flavour of an obscure computer platform ...

... then that someone needs something better to do with his or her life. Like stepping outside and breathe some fresh air.

(and yes, I find it equally ridiculous when such emotions are aimed at the other "camps" in the market.)

Hope AW.net comes back soon. It's a great place to go for Amiga news. Alongside A.org, ANN, amiga.de and the many other sites big and small made by hard working Amiga enthusiasts.

Er, well...yes. I stayed away from AW.net for a long time because of its reputation, but when I finally did visit, I found that generally it's an interesting and decent site that really doesn't deserve to be slammed. I can only think that some of the more extreme and reality-challenged blue trolls just can't stand to see a nice active site devoted to something they've decided to hate.

To make a statement like that you must understand why they hate it (and no, it's not really just "them and us" syndrome, or they'd hate other OS4 sites too. And it isn't just blue trolls who hate AW, believe it or not.). MorphZone is a site just like AW.net in its aims and membership, but isn't hated quite as much.

AW is hated for two major reasons:

1) It's unerring, if accidental, ability to spread disinformation while often giving people no real chance to speak out against it;
2) The agressively biased, political, and near-megalomaniac personalities of at least four of its moderators.

These are also the reasons why other solution-centric sites like os4depot and MorphZone aren't attacked anywhere near as much. Any site with a moderator who thinks a signature link leading to an Open PPC site is "brainwashing", or will ban people on the basis of what they say on other sites, is predestined to be hated, no matter how muddied the political waters become. And of course, fully deserving of it.

To be accepted on AmigaWorld you have to believe the Amiga is the best in the world and all Amiga companies are innocent victims targeted by Bill Buck and MorphOS users.

That website will always be attacked because the fools behind it have made it in to a religious type werbsite, who have took freedom of speech away from the users, on a positive note though all the cancer in this community can be found in one place (AW) most of the time.

The Amiga?

Hardly. Pretty much all of them have owned and used Amigas for many years, and most still use them regularly and enjoy them.

So, what is it exactly?

Amiga Inc have been the strengh behind A1 and AOS4, they are lovely guys.
