We've released a new, small graphical CPU meter for your pleasure and adulation.
It's available for download at our website. Meltium is a small graphical CPU-usage meter which displays a user selectable picture and applies some colourisation using a user selectable alpha map and colour table to it. Additionally the CPU-usage is also displayed in the screentitle when Meltium's window is the active one. Meltium requires MorphOS 1.4 for perfect operation.

"Meltium requires MorphOS 1.4 for perfect operation. "

And it does not work at all on AmigaOS??

Aw, c'mon, then it applies to all OS4 programs as well - or is there OS4 for CSPPC publicly available? Add to that, if a program for example uses WarpOS, as not all of us has PPC, will the poster be required to state it in the news title as well? (Like: Warning, if you have an A500 with 512Mb, it won't run!)?

But yea, it doesn't take alot of words to add such a tag, like OS4/WUP/MOS/ whatever.

It's a small detail but a nice gesture i think.

Ahem, I don't get it... if it can run on AmigaOS, it means it's either 68k or Warpup or Pup... but you say it's MOS-specific, so why isn't the binary MOS-native?

of course, some simple cycle gadget when submitting news could solve that problem: AmigaOS 68k, AmigaOS PUP/WUP, MorphOS, OS4, Emulation, Something else.

the problem is not that idea, the problem is the insulting way how it was posted here into the comments.

Yes.

When a program news item is posted to Amiga Network News people assume 68k AmigaOS as default.

To be fair, I suggest that people mention all main Amiga-like OS versions that the program supports when they post SW news to ANN. (AmigaOS3.x, AmigaOS4.x AROS, Amithlon (if it's native Amithlon binary), MorphOS1.x)

If a program supports all, then the length overkill will happen, which I've just mentioned.

In that special case (when the release is for all systems) it would be ok to not to list them.

I think some common sense is allowed.

Example1: "(AOS3 AOS4 MOS Amithlon)" Not too long, IMO.
Example2: " (All amigasystems, except AROS.)

Doesn't Amithlon run AOS3 ? - in which case it only would need to be

Example1: "(AOS3 AOS4 MOS)".

Example2: " (All amigasystems, except AROS.)

And then

Example 3: AROS (x86)

surely ?

In reply to Comment 22 (koan):
"Doesn't Amithlon run AOS3 ? - in which case it only would need to be"

Yes it does run AOS3.x 68k apps. But it is also capable of running it's own AOS3.x API apps that are compiled to native "big endian x86".

Also, AOS3.x 68k is enough to "hint" that it runs on all compatibles.
For some apps one could also say "AOS3.x 68k AGA" if it requires custom chips.

And agreed, AROS seem to require the CPU definition.

(time will tell if we need AACE / AmigaDE mentions someday)

I didn't know it's written in E.

On the other hand, if I had to write an E compiler nowadays, I'd make it produce C code rather than pure object code, so that it could be portable across platforms.

Actually I think some conventions would be nice. For example

MOS: blabla
(announcement about mos-only software)

OS4: blabla
(announcement about os4-only software)

blabla
(announcment about any software that runs on AmigaOS3.1, and/or has
multiple versions for different amiga-like systems, although not
necessarily all)

The rationale here is that Amithlon-only, AROS-only or UAE-only
software is rare, and I guess it will be like that for some time to
come. Of course AROS people would be free to write AROS: in front of
their releases, though. But I don't see the point in bloating every
general newsitem title with things like
"MOS/OS4/AROS/OS3.1/Amithlon/UAE/WarpOS/PowerUP".

Nah, it wouldn't really be worth the effort. IMHO the current situation is no problem at all.

In reply to Comment 25 (Johan Rönnblom):
It's a pity Johan Rönnblom's post got lost in the noise, because it makes a lot of sense. Here's a justification for keeping it simple like he suggested:

MOS is supposed to be backwards compatible (ish) with OS3.x
OS4 is supposed to be backwards compatible (ish) with OS3.x
Amithlon is suppose to be backwards compatible (ish) with OS3.x

AROS *currently* is not binary compatible with OS3.x.
MOS, OS4 and Amithlon specific binaries are not compatible with any other system.
Amithlon & AROS specific stuff is very rare.

Therefore it is quite reasonable to assume that posts apply to OS3.x (and all compatibles) unless other wise stated. The only two common alternatives are MOS & OS4, so simply pre-pending [MOS] or [OS4] to the title is quite safe. If several OSes (but not OS3.x) are supported by having several binaries, then simply prepending [mixed] or perhaps [not 68k] should be useful without going bananas.

Even better, being able to choose between "All", "MOS", "OS4" and "Mixed" from a pop-up when posting would be even better. It would be even better if I could filter the postings to only show (say) "OS4", or show everything apart from (say) "MOS".

Posted by Chris H (213.122.26.148) on 11-Sep-2004 07:23 GMT
I stupidly forgot to mention that AROS and Amithlon specific binaries could be supported by having an "Other" option in the pop-up list. And of course, the "Mixed" option would cover them too.
