I have just released a small reaction based IRC client for AmigaOS 3.x on my site. ReactionChat I started making an IRC client about a year or two ago. It was going to be based on Reaction, but I had problems with it.. clipboard support in the listbrowser class was a bit lacking.. when new text would appear in channel, the listbrowser would display it and bring that bottom new text into view - which makes it impossible to read the scrollback buffer in a busy channel, I couldnt figure out how to do nick completion with the string gadget class, and a few other things like that..... I'm still learning to program, so maybe these problems could have been worked around.. I'm not sure. But anyway, for those reasons I decided to switch to MUI. Well, this client has eventually become WookieChat .. it still needs a lot of work, but we're getting there slowly. Anyway, I've put the early Reaction version of my client online now. You can grab it from http://wookiechat.amigarevolution.com/rchat.exe . Raise the stack high before you run it. Some people like Reaction/Classact alternatives to MUI software. Well, ReactionChat is even more primitive and possibly more unstable than WookieChat, but its there for people to try out. As usual, its noncrippled shareware, but theres an option on the site to make small donations. Fanks.

Does anybody know why Amigans have some suffixes (libraries, devices, fonts, catalogs etc.) but get a shock if they see .exe? That would appear to be a most useful suffix.

I don't know why Amiga users ever use 3-letter suffixes. They should have gone out with cp/m, twenty years ago.

Particularly annoying is coders who put 3-letter extensions in the filter line of the ASL file requester, so that you have to delete the line every time you open a file. (Otherwise you miss some.) That is not what the filter is for.

I uploaded the file to my site, then realised that without a file extention it would be loaded as a page, so I had to rename it quickly... sorry guys! you can name it anything you want once its on your hard drive.

'scuse my ignorance, but what is the ASL filter field for, Don?

Yes, I'm familiar with it, and I understand your objection, but if there's a more constructive way to use it, I'm interested.

James, I did not want to suggest there is anything wrong with the program itself. All Amiga programs are welcome.

Sorry - didn't mean that to be a smart-arse question.

Depends on your Web site host - some tend to force the MIME type (based on their own special interpretation of the wonderful suffix concept, if I recall correctly), regardless of what you try to specify - that was what I was getting at.

Some news.... while I'm not going to develop this reaction version any further, I have given the sources to someone else who is eager to have a go at improving things.. so all is not lost for you reaction fans.

@James

You are a good guy have presented enough effort here with your irc client that you could apply for and possibly get a free Pegasos ODW from Freescale. You might not care about pegasos or morphos but free hardware = free hardware!

Maybe one day I'll be a competent enough programmer to deserve free hardware, but not today. :) I have ideas of stuff I want to make, but my programming ability slows development to a snail pace. Thank god for all the help forums. :)

Because Amiga executables do not need .exe suffix. And if you make icon for the application which has .exe suffix in it's name, then icon name must also include that .exe suffix. And that looks awful.

Machines has been given out in the past to people who hasn't released a darn thing in return, so why don't you go ahead and at least ask?

In reply to Comment 20 (Anonymous):
There is a clause in all this "free ODW" business, in that developers must
submit monthly reports to Freescale. Not only because they're curious, but
when you make an investment like that (especially as a public company), you
need to show that it is going to get a return.

James Carroll might be eligible for an ODW but it's a bit late to apply for it
now. He would also have to give his full contact details and a summary of what
he wanted to use the ODW for - before he would even be considered for the list.

So, free hardware is not free hardware. This time if you get it you should be
pretty motivated to use it for something, otherwise it's going to go to someone
else.

> Because Amiga executables do not need .exe suffix

You better stop beeing a smart ass Amiga user because that's an unsustainable argument: Amiga libraries don't need the .library suffix and yet they have it ;) So do many other files on Amiga computers. If files don't have an icon, the suffix is a great way to find out what kind of file it is: is it *.lha or *.lzx or *.iff or a .font or ... If there are twenty files and none has an .exe(cutable) suffix, how am I supposed to find the executable? Doubleclick on each file? The fact that some AmigaOS files have a suffix and some files do not is not an indication of the greatness of AmigaOS, it's a sign of how half-baked AmigaOS is in some regards.

> And if you make icon for the application which has .exe suffix in it's name, then icon name must also include that .exe suffix. And that looks awful.

Yes, good point, but you have the same problem with a lot of files. guides that end on *.guide, text files that end on *.rtf etc. The solution is to use a file requesters that hides *.info files.
