James Rhodes of SeaScape Software, a North American software house that produced and sold commercial Amiga hard- and software as well as shareware and freeware titles until the early 90s and switched to the Mac platform when Commodore closed down, has announced to concentrate software development efforts on the Pegasos/MorphOS platform.
Below you will find the official information taken from their homepage which currently is being updated/reworked:
'As of today, SeaScape Software is going to be concentrating its development efforts on the new Pegasos computing platform running the MorphOS from Genesi. The MorphOS and Pegasos combination will allow us to develop quality software, and also help the MorphOS community grow larger with time.
"After doing a lot of research on this new platform, we decided that it would be in our best interest to develop software for this new computing platform that offers many advantages over other platforms. While the MorphOS is still relatively young, the software engineers at Genesi are making sure it is getting better with every release. On the hardware side, the Pegasos motherboard is improving in performance, thanks to the hard work of the hardware engineers. In the near future, Genesi will be releasing a motherboard with the PPC970 processor (G5), and we are looking forward to this very much. It is an exciting time indeed!" - James Rhodes
SeaScape Software sends Genesi our best wishes for the continued success of the exciting Pegasos platform and its beautiful MorphOS operating system. Get the alternative computer, the Pegasos platform!'

Posted by Peter Gordon on 27-Sep-2004 06:50 GMT | Well... congrats for MorphOS fans. It seems you'll not be in short supply of random lottery number generators... Going back through their website on archive.org thats pretty much all they've produced.
Don't get me wrong, almost any development for MOS, AROS or AmigaOS is a good thing, but they seem to be spending more time on making fancy logos and websites than writing anything truely useful..
Lets hope MorphOS motivates them to make something better. |

I'm sure they get a free homepage design as well.... |

Posted by Johan Rönnblom on 27-Sep-2004 07:31 GMT | Hmm, I think it would be better to wait with this announcement until
there's some info about what software the company will make.
Also, for copyright reasons, I strongly doubt it's a good idea to use
MacOS imagery on the website. Especially not when doing software for
another OS. But at least it allows us to conclude that "Anonymous"'s
suspicion that Genesi made the website is wrong. :-)
Even though they don't list the product on their website, it seems
like this is the software company that got a 10.5 score in this
review: http://perversiontracker.com/archives/000030.html |

Posted by hooligan/dcs on 27-Sep-2004 07:36 GMT | Just as meaningless "commitment" to MOS as the Coyote Flux "commitment" to OS4. Neither have never released anything of use.
But as Peter said, it's nice if some people find motivation of AROS, OS4 or MOS.. god knows there are not too much developers around. |

Posted by Anonymous on 27-Sep-2004 08:07 GMT | In reply to Comment 6 (Johan Rönnblom): Maybe i'll quote that rating for you: "SeaScape Software, I give you a 10.5 for exceptional uselessness. I’ll be watching your future offerings with great interest."
And a couple of quotes from other user reviews:
"What amazes me is that this reached version 1.1.1. What features could possibly have been missing in the original release?"
"this is software for old women and retired USN airmen in big bermudas."
"Oh man, I can describe how much I laughed when I saw these popping up one after the other on VersionTracker :D
What makes some people so lucky to get such ideas, and not only once, but 8 times :D
What a mastermind!"
"v1.0 always gave 1-2-3-4-5-6"
"this software is a bargain - assuming you have some sort of exotic brain disorder preventing you from making up numbers. Add to that the fact that only California residents can use it, and the usefulness just plunges." |

I can't wait for a Altivec G5 optimised version.
I think it's in the best interest of MAC users they choose the Pegasus to develop software for.
Hell! I think it's in the best interest for ALL computer users that they have chosen the Pegasus as the computer to develop software for. ;-) |

amiga scene? Hey "hooligan" you are from the dcs team, from
which I never watch demos anyway (because there are better demos on
the c64 than you perform on amiga), but I felt it was worth writing
something here.
Coyote Flux has done many things while you were sleeping.
I remember that ppc680x0 was used for the ppc version
of one of the coolest amiga games ever called Payback.
There is much more like Kickflash OS4, multidisk.device for openPCI
(the diskdrive driver for MOS and other systems), Pocketmc, J Miner
(which I saw running at a show years ago) and many other things. |

Tehcnically, It can't happen much sooner than Marvell getting their 970-controller ready for mass production (I have not checked it's status). Besides that .. project like that needs will, money, clients and some hard work.
I have not followed Genesi closely on lately. But I can't help noticing that Neko seems to be highly against G5 (970 series) on Moobunny. I can't tell if this is official party-line or his personal opinion, though... |

As far as I know they have released the ppc converter which wasn't that useful at all (or was it even released.. I remember trying demo/beta but can't put my finger onto it being sold anywhere). I don't remember seeing JMiner released either.
About KickFlash OS4.. I didn't know it can be bought already. I remembered it was put on ice long time ago.

We've seen such announcements earlier .. millions times. How many games have been promised, how much software was promised, we got promised new exciting hardware, better brighter future and the moon from the sky. Start counting how many of those we have received.. excuse my cynicism towards any promises/commitments done for the public. |

SeaScape Software to concentrate software development efforts on the Pegasos/MorphOS platform : Comment 27 of 45 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Anders Kjeldsen on 28-Sep-2004 03:33 GMT | I doubt that (m)any serious BUSINESS has any interest in developing software for this platform (AmigaOS3, AmigaOS4, Morphos) (depends a little bit on the definition of "serious"). I think this announcement is just to make things look better for the Pegasos - unless the T-Shirts come with a small Morphos logo? :)
A serious business would have to make a lot of money, and that can't be done by writing software for Pegasos/Amiga users today. It can, however, work out for companies consisting of people with "emotional" relationship to the platform. But I think they usually work part time on it. |

Posted by JoannaK on 28-Sep-2004 04:42 GMT | In reply to Comment 27 (Anders Kjeldsen): Yep.. It's been about the same around all of them last five to ten years. Was it OS3.X,AmigaDE,OS4,MorphOS,Aros etc..
Of those.. OS3.X had some leftower-push after Commodore died, but it was lost during years of mismanagement. AmigaDE was too much empty promices and way too little technology. OS4 is too young and they don't have any funds to attract 3RD party devs. MorphOS have had some good and bad moments, but at least they do have some apps made for it and some coming. Aros... well, it's never claimed to be platform for commercial apps.
And I knowingly did left out UAE,AmigaForever and Amithlon.. IMHO they aren't enough to justify development. Perhaps if Ami/Berniethlon had had Official status and if it had become basis of Next Gen Amiga .. But, it never happened. |

Ok. :-) Payback did indeed got made with their tool like said earlier in this thread. They did some impressive stuff but it got never released because of their former employee. And lately some people felt like attacking them with anything they could. Which pissed me off since these guys are really nice. So I thought hey another attack but you just ment they did not released so much. Which is a normal comment. But you can bet on it they will do some nice stuff for os4. They just wasted a lot of time and energy for nothing. Oh yeah and for everyone else that feels like a rant about them, don't! If you really feel like a rant go on about my bucket. :-) Those guys don't deserve all that shit.
We should be happy there are people that DO want to make software. That goes for both platforms.

Posted by James Rhodes on 28-Sep-2004 21:46 GMT | Hello everyone!
Note that this story picked up from the German MorphOS-News.de site has been corrected, as David made some errors in his writing and has apologised to me for them. I have no problem with that, as he made an honest mistake in translation. You will have to go there to read it, or better yet, go to my website to read my About page.
As for the sarcastic remarks regarding my programming on the Mac while at college, I will forget about it because they were done long ago. Circa 1999-2002. :) So who really cares... I certainly don't, but if there is one thing I don't like is someone bad mouthing me without knowing who I am. A programmer takes about two years after graduation to start getting pretty good, and I am much better than I used to be. I took 7 programming languages at college and even made the Dean's Honour List in the last term, so I think I am quite qualified to program a computer. I stopped programming for Mac OS X because frankly I am quite sick and tired of many Mac users and their constant whining about everything. Some users on Versiontracker and the utterly stupid and juvenile Perversiontracker really need to get a life. Enough said...
I'll still use my Mac, but mainly now I just use it for iTunes, graphics, and web sites. I'm getting me a Pegasos II and MorphOS! :) My main focus on programming anything in the future is going to be for MorphOS. No one is paying me to do this and I am not receiving anything for doing this, as this is of my own desire to help build the MorphOS community. Anything wrong with that? I didn't think so...
Also, no I just don't have a pretty logo for the person said that. That so-called pretty logo was designed by the musically and graphically-gifted Adam Fothergill of Jetstrike fame on the Amiga, and many award-winning games on the Mac platform. I'm sure you remember the Fothergill brothers, Aaron and Adam? AMOS Club? I sure do... :) Don't disrepect the work my friend has done for me please. That is totally disrespectful to me and him...
I have a lot of great ideas for programs, including an educational line of software (mostly Mathematics) featuring two cartoon ferrets, Cubby and Pepper. I posted a picture on MorphOSZone... I certainly don't call that nothing... :-/ Some people just can never grow up... <sigh>
I am kind of glad I decided against purchasing an AmigaOne motherboard, and deciding on a Pegasos II motherboard. Why? For one simple reason... The people there are much more respectful of one's efforts to help their community. Danke schön und gute Nacht! |

Posted by James Rhodes on 28-Sep-2004 21:57 GMT | In reply to Comment 13 (takemehomegrandma): Thank you! At least someone here has some intelligence... :)
Since I am presently studying to become a Mathematics (5-12) teacher, I have a real strong desire to make fun educational Mathematics programs for kids using my two cartoon ferrets, Cubby and Pepper. That is going to be my educational line, called "Ferrets Only." For other things, I am weighing options right now. I think for the Pegasos to get into schools, we are going to need some good educational software. That will really help... Someone has to step up to the plate and do it, so I am taking the plunge so-to-speak.
Once I learn all the system nuances of MorphOS then I can begin some programming. It's going to be fun... :) |

I hope that has hardened you for this market. ;-)

In contrast to the interfaction arguing here, the MorphOS community is pretty well-mannered, especially where incoming developers are concerned. :-)
I have a lot of great ideas for programs, including an educational line of software (mostly Mathematics) featuring two cartoon ferrets, Cubby and Pepper. I posted a picture on MorphOSZone... I certainly don't call that nothing... :-/ Some people just can never grow up... <sigh>
You have to realize that there have been so many companies and individuals showing up and making announcements and promises, that people have become cynical when things didn't materialize. It's good to announce your intentions, but keep in mind the history, and be prepared for some degree of skepticism until you actually have a shipping product.
I am kind of glad I decided against purchasing an AmigaOne motherboard, and deciding on a Pegasos II motherboard. Why? For one simple reason... The people there are much more respectful of one's efforts to help their community. Danke schön und gute Nacht!
That's a little surprising to me in view of how eager (desperate? ;-) ) AmigaOne users are for new developers and applications, but I guess you have your reasons. (I understand Amiga, Inc. made things difficult in the past and had an arrogant attitude, but don't know what the official support environment is like now.) But looking at the bright side, welcome to the Pegasos/MorphOS community, and good luck.

SeaScape Software to concentrate software development efforts on the Pegasos/MorphOS platform : Comment 41 of 45 | ANN.lu |
Posted by James Rhodes on 29-Sep-2004 07:49 GMT | In reply to Comment 40 (Anders Kjeldsen): With my "Ferrets Only" cartoon ferrets, I want to use this for an educational line of Mathematics (or more) software. Children need to learn better Math skills in my opinion, and I want to help out in this area. Wouldn't it be cool if schools all of a sudden started to look at the Pegasos computer and decide to switch over, instead of buying into the Wintel juggernaut every year? It is going to take some good software to make this happen.
As for other programs, I have a few things in mind but I have to concentrate on one project first. As I am learning the MorphOS/Pegasos system nuances, I will release small programs as Freeware. These won't be huge apps, but for things I need on a daily basis in my computing life. Since I plan on moving entirely over to the MorphOS in the future, there are going to be a quite a few small apps that I will want to make.
I am not going to be producing a huge masterpiece overnight. But in due time, I will make the kind of software I want to release to the MorphOS community. This is a new platform, lots to learn, and I can't wait to dive into it. :) So for a while, I will be releasing a lot of Freeware, then when I feel comfortable I will release Shareware software. To start a good Freeware library, programmers are going to have to release a lot of useful programs. Once MorphOS 1.5 is released it will make things much easier for programmers.
Hopefully, I have answered your question. :D My artistic skills are pretty good, but I have access to two artists who are going to make my life so much easier when I do start to program huge games or educational titles. Graphics are very important to me, as well as clean coding so nothing crashes. That is one thing I learned while at college - clean code that is checked and checked and checked... You get the idea. :) I really would love to make an adventure game, based around my two cartoon ferrets (Cubby and Pepper). It has to be cute and funny at the same time. The Pegasos platform needs a game that will define it, much like some defined the Amiga platform. Who knows what the future may hold... :) |
