Alchimie IV OS4 Presentation : Comment 151 of 161 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Don Cox on 29-Sep-2004 16:28 GMT | In reply to Comment 150 (Johan Rönnblom): "Well, Ben Hermans has stated that OS4 PowerUP support is likely to
happen before OS4 WarpUP support, because it would be easier to do. If
he was wrong, please inform me."
Ben is a good guy in lots of ways, but he has never been right when predicting the future course or timing of AOS4 development. Just ignore anything he says that is in the future tense. |

Good advice.
Leave only first five words and then it will be excellent advice. |

FYI, it's not a port. |

Lets bring some Hyperion related guy into the game :-)
Some nice quote from Ben Hermans: "Unless ofcourse you want all former Phase 5 creditors and idiots who pre-paid for the Cyberstorm NG to come knocking at the door of bPlan."

Alchimie IV OS4 Presentation : Comment 156 of 161 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Sammy Nordström on 01-Oct-2004 05:46 GMT | In reply to Comment 113 (Johan Rönnblom): >Too bad it's not very present compatible.
Present? What present? I mean, there hasn't been any real official progress for years. There is nothing to be "present compatible" with, only backwards compatible. AmigaOS4 isn't about trying to compete with the Amiga emulator market, it's about revitalizing the Amiga market with new real official Amiga hardware and software in order to make the future we've been talking about for so long present. With such limited resources available, should it really be a priority to maintain backwards compatibility with up to 10 or 15 years old software? |

Posted by Johan Rönnblom on 01-Oct-2004 08:24 GMT | In reply to Comment 156 (Sammy Nordström): Because there is no new software, definitely not enough to cover the
holes?
OS4 isn't "present compatible" because it is still too unfinished to
be very useful. OS4 supporters usually motivate their support with
hopes that OS4 *will* one day be good, not by statements that it would
be very good in the present.
I too hope that it will one day be good, but as I live in the present,
this is not of great concern to me now. I'm sure I'll see. |

What is it that you cannot do with it? Please be specific.
And no, I don't agree that backwards compatibility would be a solution to the lack of software. The problem is caused by the lack of software developers for the platform and backwards compatibility will not aid that problem. On the contrary, it would reduce the need to develop software for the platform. |

Posted by JKD on 05-Oct-2004 02:19 GMT | In reply to Comment 98 (Sammy Nordström): Only the real AmigaOS is compatible with itself? On the surface this might be kind of a redundant statement but the equality isn't necessarily true. I read of underlying changes to the OS and API which will make re-compilation of current apps necessary since one of the Frieden twins states that the design work is incomplete....
I think in this thread here:

Companies don't develop software because it's "needed" but because they think it will be profitable. You don't see much profit if you spend half a million dollars developing a program and five people buy it. |

An existing program contains a certain function which I use. AOS4 doesn't run that program because of missing graphics functions.
Nobody is writing a duplicate of that program, nor are they likely to.
Tell me why I should buy an AmigaOne? |
