Yes, that is exactly right - Terrrasoft was partnered with MAI for a minute there but I dont think they were "feeling" the Teron tech..

On A positive note, this is a great step for Genesi and the Pegasos. The Official YDL support is fantastic.

Genesi Pegasos II Systems to Enable Linux Workshop at Freescale SNDF

SMART NETWORKS DEVELOPER FORUM, FRANKFURT, GERMANY - SEPT. 30, 2004 - Genesi Open Desktop Workstations based on the Pegasos II were used during a hands-on Linux workshop the last day of Freescale's Smart Networks Developer Forum Europe (SNDF Europe). The PowerPC® architecture, with the AltiVec SIMD engine, is an excellent alternate architecture for Linux applications, and the Genesi Pegasos II system comes equipped with the MPC7447 PowerPC processor from Freescale and the Marvell Discovery II northbridge.

"As a member of our Smart Networks Alliance Program, Genesi is a key enabler of Linux development on the PowerPC architecture. We want to encourage developers to leverage the PowerPC architecture for their Linux applications, as this architecture can provide both performance and cost benefits for system designs," said Glenn Beck, Director of Marketing, Computer Platform Division, Networking and Computing Systems Group, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.

"We are pleased to see the success of the Pegasos platform," added Viren Shah, Product Line Manager for Marvell's System Controllers. "The Pegasos platform, based on Marvell's advanced Discovery architecture, provides significant time to market advantages to our customers."

The machines were provided with a choice of operating systems including Gentoo, Crux, Yellow Dog and Debian GNU/Linux. Also included was MorphOS, a lightweight fully featured non-UNIX based Amiga-compatible operating system. All developers who participated in the Linux workshop were given an Open Desktop Workstation.

SNDF Europe was held September 27th-30th at the Sheraton Frankfurt Hotel & Towers, Frankfurt Airport, Germany.

Wow... People has even started to forget what the Pegasos was about before Thendic got into the picture... Well, atleast for me as an Amiga enthusiast, the Pegasos and MorphOS is still the "unofficial" alternative. It's the only thing that makes the platform relevant for Amiga users to begin with, now isn't it?

Naturally, I find it rather ironic when Pegasos supporters says it's good to have official support, which is why I said what I said. See?

I don't think anyone has rejected "official" support - like this. I guess you just link anything up to Amiga Inc which in this case would mean: "The Pegasos supporters said they didn't need Amiga Inc's blessing, so I find it ironic that they now say that it's good that Pegasos is supported by YDL". Two different things, of course.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it won't make a difference :)

Now shoo.

The Pegasos is the only official *MorphOS* alternative though! :-P

> It's the only thing that makes the platform relevant for Amiga users to begin
> with, now isn't it?

What, being official? No, that's of no importance at all, the *Amiga compatibility* is! And to be honest, in this area MorphOS actually beats the crap out of "the official" solution, at least for now! And if this isn't a subject to change in a close future, I'm sorry, but then you can keep your "officiality"!

(And Sammy, the only way you can run MorphOS is by buying a Pegasos, the official MorphOS alternative! MorphOS won't run on AmigaOne! ;-))

The fact that the Pegasos is well supported by other OS's (it runs the latest Linux *fine*!) is not only a great bonus to us Pegasos owners, it's also a source of income for Genesi; a chance to collect resources that hopefully will make the future of the Pegasos more stable ...

The reason for discussing the Pegasos on THIS forum is the hope that it will some day be able to run an Amiga OS. It still has no support from Amiga, but now has the support of a Linux distribution. Good news for people -like me- considering dropping the AMIGA idea and moving over to Linux.

Sure, but this discussion really isn't about MorphOS, now is it?

>
>What, being official?

No, beeing UNofficial.

>No, that's of no importance at all, the *Amiga compatibility* is!

Which is what makes it an unofficial alternative, isn't it?

>And to be honest, in this area MorphOS actually beats the crap out of "the
>official" solution, at least for now!

No. If an AmigaOS application would for some reason not function properly on AmigaOS, then it's because the application has poor AmigaOS compatibility, not because AmigaOS lacks AmigaOS compatibility. You make software for an OS, not the other way around.

However, I guess you are refering to certain incompatibilities between different versions of the AmigaOS, which has been the case for almost every new release of the AmigaOS, especially when it has been adapted to work with new hardware. Nothing, including MorphOS, beats the compatibility of running software on the hardware and OS it was intended for. AmigaOS3.x is the best OS for running AmigaOS3.x applications and AmigaOS4.0 is the best OS for running AmigaOS4.0 applications. Both operating systems are official and MorphOS will never be able to be as compatible, period.

>And if this isn't a subject to change in a close future, I'm sorry, but then
>you can keep your "officiality"!

If you think there is nothing more than just a name or a label to beeing official, then I honestly feel sorry for you. For me, beeing official is about setting an industry standard. Pretty much like Genesi is trying to do with their Open Desktop Workstation definition, an "open" hardware standard for Pegasos computers from bPlan only.

>(And Sammy, the only way you can run MorphOS is by buying a Pegasos, the
>official MorphOS alternative! MorphOS won't run on AmigaOne! ;-))

What happened to the Blizzard/Cyberstorm version?

>source of income for Genesi; a chance to collect resources that hopefully will

Well, hardware is a commodity to me. I'll buy whatever hardware suits the OS and applications I intend to use, not the other way around.

If so, I completely fail to see it! ;-)

> The reason for discussing the Pegasos on THIS forum is the hope that it will
> some day be able to run an Amiga OS.

I would dare to claim that *the name* of the OS is of less importance to the Pegasos owners of today in this community, nor whether it's official or not. If the unofficial solution is performing better, is actually working, is cheaper, is actually available for purchase *now* if you want to, is more Amiga compatible, has better developer support among todays developers, then who wants to be "official"?

The future is not something static, things are always a subject to change. In the long run, *the best* solution, the most *widely spread* solution, and the solution with the *best support* among developers and users will *set the standard*, thus becoming the future "official" solution (in quotation marks meaning the solution that almost everyone will use), which *not necessarily* will be the branded one!

> It still has no support from Amiga

Really, who cares?

> but now has the support of a Linux distribution.

Several, actually ...

> Good news for people -like me- considering dropping the AMIGA idea and moving
> over to Linux.

If you consider dropping the Amiga, you will probably still feel right at home with MorphOS. Personally, I'm not *that* interested in Linux myself, but one of my Pegasos computers (a Peg2 G3) is used as a server (totally silent!), and for that purpose the Linux is very good (Gentoo rulez! ;-)).

But MorphOS is what interests me the most ...

Who said "the name" was important for the individual? Of course it's not important for you or me in our daily computer activities. A brand has no practical function what so ever for the individual consumer besides giving an identity for the product. However, when you're taking an active interest in trying to create a business and/or a market for a specific computer platform, it is crucial to have a strong brand name and a big plus if it already has world wide recognition value, as with the case of the Amiga brand. As an Amiga enthusiasts, I want what's best for the Amiga market so that it may come alive again and hopefully even grow into a profitable business. An alternative computer platform that is competing for the Amiga user base by providing us with backwards compatibility for a convinient transition to their new computer platform is a counter productive effort, IMO.

Which is the "best" solution is rather subjective and the most "widely spread" solution is Windows. Which solution has the best support among developers is for the developers to decide, which again is rather subjective, while standards is only possible for software and hardware developers to create. Standards can be encouraged by users at the most, but not until it has been created.

Both solutions sucks actually for user and serious applications, but MorphOS seems be better than OS4, time will telll, I'm still prefer to wait...

Will YDL be shipped with each Pegasos board now?

Seems like Terrasoft sales of Pegasoses + YDL could be a plausible scenario, since TSS has tried to stroll down the non-Apple lane before. OTOH, they could feel that they were burned too badly that time to try again.

And when Teron's didn't have that fix TSS had to cancel Teron sellin project (about half a year later?)

Heh. Well, as JoannaK points out, TSS were smacked in the mouth twice.
First around the time when BBRV gleefully pointed out that TSS would be fscked if they would go ahead with the Terons, and second when they actually tested the Terons (and were fscked).

I don't know/remember if Mik^H^H^H"Asemoon" was involved when Kai Staats too was informed about BBRV's escapades on ANN, but if the "TSS are fscked by the Terons" jab would be sufficient cause to prevent a good(??) deal, then it only goes to show that it's not just a few of the actors on the Amiga "market" that are childish and long-sighted.

That they were basically the same hardware as the Peg1, while at the same time being cheaper* could have something to do with it. The field is still open, of course, for speculation on whether BBRV had pissed them off in some way even before the "Teron = dead end" statement.

*) I'm talking about Terons bought in batches directly from the producer, like Eyetech do it. TSS were going to sell them for $500. IIRC, the end-user price of the Peg1 was something like $600 at the time, and I don't know if bPlan/Genesi would have let TSS do their own production runs without middlemen.

I guess 'Anywhere' means WinCE devices from three years ago..

Not being associated with Amiga is the BEST thing that ever happened
to the PegasosII.

Genesi got away from MAI based boards for a reason. It doesn't matter
to me or them if its the MAI chip itself, the southbridge, some
bizarre undocumented bad reaction between the two or what.. The point
is they went with a chipset that works and works well.

It seems to me like Genesi are consistently making choices which net
them new customers and greater exposure for the fledgeling PPC clone
market which they pioneer.

Amiga and clowns can't say that and I bet it pisses you off too. I
know it pisses me off, I might never get the money I'm owed either.

them new customers and greater exposure for the fledgeling PPC clone
market which they pioneer.

Amiga and clowns can't say that and I bet it pisses you off too. I

Just my two cents..

If a rule to not post idiotic posts was to be introduced to the ANN.lu guidelines, I have my doubts it would be very beneficial for you, Eva.
