SMART NETWORKS DEVELOPER FORUM, FRANKFURT, GERMANY - SEPT. 30, 2004 - Genesi Open Desktop Workstations based on the Pegasos II were used during a hands-on Linux workshop the last day of Freescale's Smart Networks Developer Forum Europe (SNDF Europe).

The PowerPC® architecture, with the AltiVec SIMD engine, is an excellent alternate architecture for Linux applications, and the Genesi Pegasos II system comes equipped with the MPC7447 PowerPC processor from Freescale and the Marvell Discovery II northbridge.

As a member of our Smart Networks Alliance Program, Genesi is a key enabler of Linux development on the PowerPC architecture. We want to encourage developers to leverage the PowerPC architecture for their Linux applications, as this architecture can provide both performance and cost benefits for system designs, said Glenn Beck, Director of Marketing, Computer Platform Division, Networking and Computing Systems Group, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.

We are pleased to see the success of the Pegasos platform, added Viren Shah, Product Line Manager for Marvell's System Controllers. The Pegasos platform, based on Marvell's advanced Discovery architecture, provides significant time to market advantages to our customers.

The machines were provided with a choice of operating systems including Gentoo, Crux, Yellow Dog and Debian GNU/Linux. Also included was MorphOS, a lightweight fully featured non-UNIX based Amiga-compatible operating system. All developers who participated in the Linux workshop were given an Open Desktop Workstation.

SNDF Europe was held September 27th-30th at the Sheraton Frankfurt Hotel & Towers, Frankfurt Airport, Germany.

In the meantime AmigaOne and all related products are SNOBBED and ignored by everyone ...
Actually Pegasos2 is Freescale first used hardware due the Apple "closed minds" about other OS enstead of MacOS.
Bplan engeeners alredy had presamples of Dual Core G4 while someone continue to have UNUSABLE and UNSTABLE DMA transfers (go on MAI forum enstead to read balls from some good blue boyz)
Terratec too that now in Linux Yellow DOgs 4 supports natively Pegasos 2.
But if you are happy with your Articia dongle ...

I know both sides are to be blamed. But that one seems more... passionate. Ok, never mind. I'm just glad some mainstream event got Amiga name mentioned a few times in positive light. We've had so little of that in the previous 10 years. Irony lies in what actually was mentioned there: an Amiga compatible, not Amiga itself.

I think it is more accurate that a small faction on each side is to be blamed.
The majority of this community are normal folks who get on fine with one another.

>But that one seems more... passionate.

And more stupid, nobody seems to notice that the more arguments there are, the more passionate it becomes, the more users are going to leave.

If it continues all that's going to be left is a very small community of trolls engaged in an everlasting argument over what will have become quite literally, nothing.

Apologies for posting something on-topic...

It seems to me that Freescale are trying to promote a variety of software platforms on PPC. They probably know that most of their sales for computer-usage go to Apple, and they're probably keen to have a lot more diversity in their business.

This'll be why they've been buying Open Desktop Workstation's to give to developers. I think they aren't interested in which OS the programmers develop for, as long as it brings in more users to PPC computers.

In light of this, perhaps they'd consider sponsoring or funding further MOS development. It is one of only a few commercial PPC OSes, and they already have ties with Genesi... and presumably personnel at bPlan.

Honestly i KNEW this was gonna happen, that's why i didn't but the A1, you cant compete with german enginering it is simply the best and has always been. Most of the military equipment used by the usa today is based on german inventions, stolen after ww2, and listen: Pegasos.. it sounds cool, "Amiga one" on the other hand does not (the Girlfriend 1) may have been a cool name back in the 80's when people were stupid and all, but you can't sell anything under a bad name, who the hell would buy the pornmobil 5000, even if it was better than a Mercedes Amg ? personaly i belive that OS4 is a better system than morphos (btw morphos also sounds cool) but that it wont stand a chance with the A1... so for now, to hell with them both, windows 2000 does the job for me.

OS4 for Pegasos.

The "One" bit means it has one processor - I recently found an old "Fleecy" interview on the web with that delicious quote from him in it.

Fleecy seems to have memory problems.

In that interview he says

"The Amiga One isn't called Amiga One because it is the first (it obviously isn't). It's called the one because it has one processor in it, and we need to be able to distinguish from our later products."

Then later in 'Ask Fleecy' he says "I don't know why Eyetech chose that name. They only have a licence to the name 'AmigaOne' at the moment"

But it was never Eyetech who chose that name - it was Amiga Inc.

"We have also announced another partner, bPlan GmbH, who are creating a new AmigaONE PPC based desktop computer." (from October 2000 Exec update, referring to the Pegasos)

The "ONE" thing was originally done by Sun, who renamed their iPlanet application server to SunONE. The O.N.E. stands for Open Network Environment. Lots of other companies have since used the ONE thing too...

As said many many times before - of course Genesi will fully support a port of AmigaOS 4.x to the Pegasos. If Hyperion Entertainment agree to do the port, we can resell it on the store bundled with a Pegasos (to fulfil the OEM terms) and the license fee from each copy can be rolled back to whoever. Dongling is easily acheived if only they'd ask.. :)

Well, considering Amiga Inc.'s past experience from signing license agreements with the managment of Genesi, I doubt Hyperion and KMOS would want to go there. Soon they would have Genesi suing them for not complying with the license for the sake of trying to acquire the rights for AmigaOS4 from Hyperion and KMOS.

Sammy... as long as they pay whichever the license agreements are they have as any rights as anyother doing the license. You can't always be stuck to the past, and you can neither descriminate one for anothers... as long as Genesi "fully support a port of AmigaOS 4.x to the Pegasos", as long as they pay for doing the port over to Pegasos, I don't see how in a business world that couldn't happen, unless if OS4 team is afraid of having it against MOS, which is a very bad thing to do in my opinion...

I believe that Genesi would fully support the idea. They would probably also support the programmers in any way by providing documentation, hardware, etc, perhaps even withouth charging Hyperion money for it. They would then probably also help selling the OS in combination with the Pegasos through the distribution channels and connection networks that is being built up, and channel all money (was it 100 Euro per copy?) back to the OS owner.

In reply to Comment 34 (pixie):
Any port of OS4 would have to use the OpenFirmware. Flashing the ROM without the official tool would void your warranty. There is no choice.

There's no reason for AmigaOS 4 to require U-Boot; on the contrary it should be a much easier solution to use the OpenFirmware since it has the requisite API to perform many low-level hardware functions. It also sets up the Via chipset properly *snigger* :)

Notez bien; as in comment 38, nobody said Genesi was prepared to make any financial outlay to prepare a port; unless of course it was done in-house. Genesi have not paid for the port of any other OS (bar OpenBSD for a commercial project).

Why should Genesi take all the risk and lay out money, only to be burdened to pay license fees at the end of it? That's what we call a money pit. Throw money down it and never see any back. It's not good business, is it?

The best way for everyone is for the port to be done with good technical assistance from Genesi. Then the OEM copies of OS4.0 would be sold, optionally, bundled with Pegasos machines.

Therefore the outcome of it all would be a new product; the Amiga-Compatible-branded Pegasos which comes with OS4 in a box. Or perhaps a version of the Open Desktop Workstation which comes with an OS4 in a box.

The cost of the bundle would include licensing and some agreed royalties. That way it is fair for everyone.

The Pegasos + OS4 combination COULD be sold at any place where Genesi products are sold; that includes of course things like Freescale's website and anywhere else you usually go to buy a Pegasos (Genesi store, Vesalia etc.)

As for Ralph, he has no real say in who gets to have their OS on the Pegasos. He is the MorphOS lead. He doesn't dictate which Linux and which BSD or whether QNX are allowed to port. It's not his department. It's not even mine! But some day this petty bickering has to end and we have to work together - every day the AmigaOne has a problem, is a day lost to sell OS4 bundled with hardware.

At the end of the day the PowerPC is moving to a more efficient system-on-chip architecture with integrated system buses, dual core processing, PCI-express, gigabit ethernet and suchlike built in to the processor. No need for a northbridge. Only minimal need for a true southbridge (only a consideration for cost reduction and part-count reduction compared to discrete peripheral controllers e.g. USB, Firewire, SATA)

At that point who needs Mai? Why build an ITX board and SQUEEZE all those components when you can do a credit card sized system and put an Amiga badge on it? We are not talking about a handheld device which runs Windows CE with some contrived application layer on it; we are talking native, full performance PowerPC devices that run your favourite OS (whatever the hell it might be..). Imagine a PDA or a book-device which was as free in terms of the OS that ran on it as the Pegasos.
