Great news and very inspiring reading all in all! Read it! :-) |

Posted by AM on 09-Oct-2004 18:53 GMT | about 2/3 down in the article U can find AmigaOne mentioned:
"....AmigaOne still has critical unresolved DMA issues"
What is the story behind this ? Is this important for OS4 development ? |

Posted by Sammy Nordström on 09-Oct-2004 22:48 GMT | In reply to Comment 12 (Anonymous): Trying to work around hardware bugs, reverse engineering the VIA chipset due to the lack of support from VIA... The wording is quite different depending on who you ask. Some people think Eyetech, MAI and Hyperion is just trying to cover something up, while some people think that those favoring a certain alternative is just looking for a reason to throw mud at Eyetech, MAI and Hyperion. In both cases, people tend to choose a wording that suits their agenda.
My advice to you is just that you should take anything anyone says on ANN.lu with a bucket load of salt. Yes, regardless of how ironic it may seem, that includes me as well. |

Posted by Sammy Nordström on 09-Oct-2004 22:54 GMT | In reply to Comment 11 (AM): BTW, it only effects the development of drivers that make use of DMA in one way or another and Eyetech has stated that they hope to have this issue resolved in time for the release of AmigaOS4. |

Posted by JoannaK on 10-Oct-2004 03:04 GMT | In reply to Comment 14 (Sammy Nordström): Yep..
Common problem on sites is that peoples knowledge or experience on some particular area is not respected.. anyone can make (and will) whatever comments they like.. Ok, it's definitely anarchsticly democratic, but unfortunately it tends to lead company coverups, smoke/mirrors etc. tactics. As long as any company has coule tallented spinmasters and flock of loyal sheeps they can get away with any Lame excuse...
And it can go on year after year. |

Posted by Anonymous on 10-Oct-2004 07:01 GMT | In reply to Comment 14 (Sammy Nordström): Facts remains though, that there are DMA problems with the Amiga One
hardware, and they are trying to solve them through software. Some
things cant even be fixed through hardcoding patches into the OS, so
they will also have to use additional hardware, like external IDE
controllers. |

As usual, any statement that contains the word "fact" is doubtful. Until an Amigaone is demonstrated working perfectly (onboard sound working, and IDE, SCSI, Ethernet, and PCI sound cards all working simultaneously without any faults), and those concerned explain what solved the problems, the whole question is uncertain.
The onboard sound may turn out to be a completely different problem from the rest.
IMO it will be a few months yet before anyone can talk about "facts".
In the meantime, both the Pegasos and the AmigaOne projects are making steady progress, not as fast as they would like, and not without problems, but definite progress. This is certainly a good thing. |

An excellent report. A model for how show reports should be done. And all very positive for those who want to see PPC based computers succeed in the market. |

Not at all, FACT IS that the Amiga One does not work properly NOW, try one yourself if you don't believe me. That is A PROVEN AND ADMITTED, UNDISPUTABLE FACT. Whether it can be fixed or not (and if Eyetech really will fix it for all users out there), either by software or by hardware, remains to be seen, and that is a completely different matter. Fact is also that it looks like they are at least trying. |

Posted by Don Cox on 10-Oct-2004 10:25 GMT | In reply to Comment 20 (Anonymous): "Not at all, FACT IS that the Amiga One does not work properly NOW,"
Few would dispute that, although it does seem to be getting nearer to working properly. However, you claimed as a "fact" that "there are DMA problems with the Amiga One hardware," which is a more narrow and specific claim and not at all certain.
The problems may be wholly or partly with the software, including the initialisation of the VIA chip. Nobody knows until they are all fixed. Until then, statements about "facts" are premature.
(We are talking about the AmigaOnes sold so far, I take it, not about the forthcoming models.) |

You're insufficiently modest, Sammy; anything you say should be taken with large doses of reality-altering pharmaceuticals. Even then, it will only be rendered mildly entertaining, and in no way useful or relevant.
This has been a Public Service Gratuitous Insult; thank you for reading.

Posted by Anonymous on 10-Oct-2004 12:34 GMT | In reply to Comment 19 (Don Cox): Agreed. Tho it was a bit thin on the non-Genesi stuff. Or was Genesi all that omnipresent as I was given the impression by this report? If so, more power to them.
In contrast:

A sickening, self-glorifying and ridiculous 'report.' A model for how show reports should not be done. And all very negative for those who want to see PPC based computers succeed in the market. |
