Taken from AmigaWorld.net:

"It is with considerable satisfaction that Hyperion Entertainment can now announce the immediate availability for download of the first Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release update for registered Amiga OS 4.0 users." Due to the extent and scope of the improvements incorporated into the update, it comes in the form of a full ISO image (33 MB) which needs to be burned on CD-R(W) by the user and is intended to replace the original Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release CD for installation and rescue purposes.

Please note that the file as well as the resulting CD is for personal use only and may not be distributed in any form to third parties.

Registered users may also opt to order a new full CD which also contains the updated SDK and contribution section (details and terms to be announced shortly).

Among the new features are:

* Kernel-Level Altivec support.
* Much improved compatibilty/speed of 68k emulation (JIT not included yet)
* Improved 68k FPU emulation
* Fully PowerPC-native Picasso96/graphics system
* Fully PowerPC-native MUI
* USB support for input devices
* Support for onboard serial and parallel hardware
* Driver support for the SiI0680 IDE adaptor (including UDMA support)
* Improved PIO mode VIA driver
* Improved Internet capabilities and better ethernet support.
* Printing support
* Improved audio hardware support, including new drivers.
* Comprehensive bug fixes, speed improvements, added features and functionality across all system components.
* and much more...

"Reinstall doesn't seem to do it. Strangely though he can boot from CD..."

There is bound to be one or two people with problems.

Having glanced through the new and pre-delete threads, the general response is that it installs easily and AOS4 is now much faster and more responsive. Seems to be a big success.

Sweet, is "* Much improved compatibilty/speed of 68k emulation (JIT not included yet)" waisted work when JIT is actually released or will it be used sometimes then JIT isn't the best choice?

Couldn't it be old versions of commodities lying around in your wbstartup? That is, if you just did an upgrade.
They'd need to be moved from tools/commodities to wbstartup again.

Some interesting numbers:

AmigaOne + G4 + updated OS4 with AltiVec in the kernel level:

RC5-72: 11 403 264 keys/s
OGR-P2: 25 713 493 nodes/s

That's quite fast I could say :)

Maybe they meant to delete a different thread.

Regardless, it is rather an odd thing to accidentally do! Especially with such an important thread!

Also odd that there is no "undelete" function. With data-retention being so important you'd think that the function would mere mark the thread as "deleted" and maybe move it to a special hidden "deleted" forum. No blatto the entries permanently from the database!

In an automated sense, ie is there a scenario that will trigger execution with the interpreter? Or do you mean as a fallback option that must be manually selected if a program crashes with the compiler? Will the integration of the JIT be seamless on all levels, including the "complicated" stuff (self-modifying code, hooks, libraries and devices etc.)?

You don't have questions to me, but I do have one for you: what is sarcastic in my answer about a crashy system? In any release of AOS4, including but not limited to the prerelease stability is a main question. This is one thing why it takes a bit long while it reaches the average users.
I don't want to increase the instability with the half baked JIT emulation. I hope this is very clear now. I don't intend to be sarcastic at all.

Ask me if you are curious, my name is not Ralph. ;)
But please send the questions directly to me, I don't read ann.lu too often. The air here is... Hm... Let's say too Blue to me.

Yes, eg. low memory situations.

If the program crashes then no way to automatize the blacklisting, so it can be blacklisted by the user if really needed. (Blacklisted executables will never be emulated with dynamic recompilation then.)

> Will the integration of the JIT be seamless on all levels, including the "complicated" stuff (self-modifying code, hooks, libraries and devices etc.)?

Yes. Self modifying works if it flushes the caches properly, libraries, hooks, devices, plugins, whatever is emulated without any explicit request.

In reply to Comment 59 (Hans-Joerg Frieden):
>> There is bound to be one or two people with problems.
>Yeah, I guess that is inevitable.

But why does it have to be me? ;-)

Problem one:
Cannot get Firmware to upgrade. Booting from CDROM written from ISO (directly with cdrecord, no extras) halts at error "No real ELF image installed as bootloader". Twice. So I didn't upgrade UBoot.

Problem two:
Upgrading the SLB turns my machine into an expensive paper weight. Machine halts with:
No config files found in any supported media/device!
No configuration found in any partition

Re-installing the old version worked, so I kept that ;-)

Problem three:
Installed the update on a fresh partition, renamed the old kickstart directory and copied across the new one to have a quick go. Halting at early boot menu, selecting the partition with the update as boot partition, go. Crashes at setpatch. Ooooh, this is starting to look like a fun evening.

Add to that, my new 4Mbit fiber-to-the-home worked for 15 whole minutes before shutting down completely today (I've had it for almost two weeks and have managed 15 minutes of surfing. Oh what joy). I am not amused.

Now I'm going home. Have forgotten to eat dinner today (oh well, I managed to squeeze down a whole pineapple, and it's still not too late to wok up some moose and add a bit of that uncle ben's tikka masala sauce I accidently purchased a while ago (hey, I know uncle ben sucks rats ass, I just couldn't get any other brands at the time...))

The update when like planed, I read the documents carefully before I started, not being to proud to not read them, then I updated the firmware whit out any problems brunt it whit Make-CD using RAW image (mode 2), then brunt the OS40 ISO image on a CD, installed the new slb_nolinux, every thing worked fine, tried boot the CD, and I forgot to tell uboot to boot from CDROM so it read all my kickstart files from workbench: and not from the CD, as result the Update CD opens an unsupported videomode, so removed the CD, boot form disk and updated OS40 from workbench, it all worked like a dram, tested the USB thing and it did not work at first, so I added the line "usbctrl start" to s:startup-sequence and it worked, I'm now using USB port for mice, and it allot smoother, every thing is faster, and lots of classic games that crashed or did not work, now works or is working better. listing directory's goes allot faster, gfx is extremely fast,

!! clearly the compatibility list at intuitionbase need to wiped now, that things have improved, !!

Sorry to hear you have problems.

Everything worked well here -- but I updated Firmware from a floppy. It seems CD drives of various brands is definately an issue for some, so I'd try floppy installing (if you can).
I didn't boot from the newly created AOS4-update CD either (doing that gave me all sorts of weird things, like missing locales and stuff). Just inserting the disk after AOS4 was already loaded and clicking worked nicely. Then a trip into Media Toolbox and it was all done ... Hope you get it to work.

It will contain a blacklist. Programs known not to work with JIT will get onto the list. Doing this automatically would perhaps be possible, but would be more effort than it's worth - after all a program may crash because the it contains bugs as well.

Other than that, JIT will run automatically.

Just to make sure, you *did* boot with diskboot, not boota? Because that message looks like you have been using boota. (and yes, the U-Boot readme needs to be updated; I've heard that before today ;-)

If you upgrade SLB without upgrading U-Boot, I am surprised that it actually does anything at all. The new SLB requires the new u-Boot.

Heard this one before, but I can't make it happen on my machine. Do you have a serial line? If yes, please try to capture the output and send that to me privately, I'd like a peek at that.

I tried any number of combinations. Some gave me nothing, others gave me that error. I guess that error comes from when I tried boota, yes. diskboot 500000 2:0 didn't work any better (when I had the image on a partition, diskboot 500000 0:6 worked, though. So it's fine. I'm past that particular obstacle :-) )
