I like this kind of advertising, it's totally rational ;) There was a nice article in the NYT yesterday: If Your Brain Has a 'Buy Button,' What Pushes It? About "neuromarketing". I wonder how the buy-this-big-thing-and-get-little-thing-for-free strategy shows up on the M.R.I. Are people really so dumb, does it work?

I wouldn't call it dumb. Sure you can buy used RTL8029AS NIC cards for ~$1-$2 on eBay, but these are new. Not a terrible deal, free is free:-)

I wasn't thinking specifically about your offer (don't take it personal) but about the FREE gift strategy in general. It is, on some level, totally absurd, but must be working great. We are probably a very dumb species. We see a "gift" and must have it :)

Just replace the word "Free" with "compulsory" to get the true meaning.
