SMART NETWORKS DEVELOPER FORUM, FRANKFURT, GERMANY - SEPT. 30, 2004 - Genesi Open Desktop Workstations based on the Pegasos II were used during a hands-on Linux workshop the last day of Freescale's Smart Networks Developer Forum Europe (SNDF Europe).

The PowerPC® architecture, with the AltiVec SIMD engine, is an excellent alternate architecture for Linux applications, and the Genesi Pegasos II system comes equipped with the MPC7447 PowerPC processor from Freescale and the Marvell Discovery II northbridge.

As a member of our Smart Networks Alliance Program, Genesi is a key enabler of Linux development on the PowerPC architecture. We want to encourage developers to leverage the PowerPC architecture for their Linux applications, as this architecture can provide both performance and cost benefits for system designs, said Glenn Beck, Director of Marketing, Computer Platform Division, Networking and Computing Systems Group, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.

We are pleased to see the success of the Pegasos platform, added Viren Shah, Product Line Manager for Marvell's System Controllers. The Pegasos platform, based on Marvell's advanced Discovery architecture, provides significant time to market advantages to our customers.

The machines were provided with a choice of operating systems including Gentoo, Crux, Yellow Dog and Debian GNU/Linux. Also included was MorphOS, a lightweight fully featured non-UNIX based Amiga-compatible operating system. All developers who participated in the Linux workshop were given an Open Desktop Workstation.

SNDF Europe was held September 27th-30th at the Sheraton Frankfurt Hotel & Towers, Frankfurt Airport, Germany.
