ANN will go through some massive changes over the next few weeks. I'll be changing the visual style a bit, modify the site structure and news presentation, and search for moderators and contributors. In the current situation, with all the problems I've been facing, I could either close down ANN or reconsider everything and aim for something higher, better. I've decided to try the later.

I'll leave for Lithuania tomorrow morning, and only return on Monday evening. That means no updates until then, possibly even longer.
The quality of ANN's news service has been going down a lot lately, and I'm the one to blame. Please accept my sincerest apologies, but please also understand that a number of things are preventing me from having the right motivation to update this site - or use a computer at all, for that matter. I've always been very open about this site and what is going on behind the scenes, and right now I can just say that I've been wondering lately for how long I can keep ANN going in its current state, or whether I shouldn't just abandon it altogether. Granted, I'm still making enough money to cover my Internet connection and server bills, but that's pretty much the only reason that's left. And even then, the revenue is going down all the time, and will probably barely reach 100$ this month.
But you're probably all enjoying the summer away from your computers anyway, and won't care too much about this.

[Motd] Hard disk won't spin up | ANN.lu |
Posted on 03-Jul-2000 07:46 GMT by Christian Kemp | 32 comments View flat View list |
I think I killed my desktop's hard disk. The computer is typically running all the time, but on Saturday I switched it off for the first time in months. When I switched it back on an hour later, the hard disk, an 8 GB Samsung unit, wouldn't spin up again. The BIOS doesn't recognise it anymore, and I can't hear a single sound from it if I switch on, or reset, the machine. Does anyone have any useful suggestions as to what I could possibly do, apart from just rushing out and getting a more reliable IBM drive and starting from scratch?
Update 13-Jul-2000: It seems to be working again. I like problems that just resolve themselves when ignored for a week.

I will be on Digital Jam on CNN tomorrow night. This is a live broadcast
from 4:30pm to 5:30pm Pacific Time. Now I am only to have 3 to 6 minutes on the show, and they will not confirm that actual time till tomorrow morning, but it is the first television
coverage for us. There is a link off of the www.CNNFN.com web site where people can view the show.

Seems like Linux is getting into the same problem with their tradeshows that the Amiga has been in in the last few years.. too many shows, badly managed, and not enough companies or attendees to make them worthwhile.
Check out the /. article http://slashdot.org/features/00/06/30/151245.shtml
