[Motd] AmigaOnline.net at AmiWest 2000...ANN.lu

Most of you may already be aware that I displayed AmigaOnline.net advertisements for some time, and that they never paid. As it turns out, neither personal emails nor open complaints here on ANN made them fulfill their part of our agreement, even though they finally (perhaps a month ago) promised to send me the cheque for all money owed. Now, as one of the last possibilities to get the 500$+ that they owe me, I'm asking all my visitors that are going to attend the AmiWest show to walk up to AmigaOnline's or AntiGravity's booth, for both companies share the same owner, and ask them when they intend to pay me. I feel a bit reluctant to ask this on here, and I'm sure that some people will criticize me for going public with such a request, but considering that ANN is a hobby project, 500$ are a lot of money, and I'd greatly appreciate being paid the money that AmigaOnline agreed to pay in the first place. Surely, for a company that intended to buy the Amiga for 5 million $, it shouldn't be that difficult to come up with about $500 for 40 days of extensive exposure on one of the largest Amiga sites... Don't you think? Update 28/Jul/2000: I received this message from them today: We have mailed the check for the advertising on Ann.lu. Check [..] in the amount of $508.89.
[Motd] "Add news item" now with previewANN.lu
Posted on 25-Jul-2000 19:37 GMT by Christian Kemp0 comments
I spent the last twenty minutes on adding preview functionality to the Add News Item forms. So while it should work, it hasn't been tested and fine-tuned all that much. I'm also using this occasion to remind everyone that you're encouraged to actually use this page to submit news. :) Bear in mind however, that articles will only appear instantly on the Unmoderated section and might be moved to the main page eventually - if the news item is worth a main page display, that is.

I added some features to the comments script, but I'm not entirely finished yet. I must really have been away from my code for a very long time, since it took me a considerable time and effort to implement one part without breaking another, all that for pretty trivial modifications. // Two people I knew from athletics died in a car crash on Friday. Even though I didn't know them all that well, I've been repeatedly thinking, during these updates here, about how tragic life can be at times. // I still wasn't paid by AmigaOnline.NET, despite their promise a few weeks ago that they would finally pay me. "I am Jack's complete lack of surprise" (to quote Fight Club), and frankly, I don't expect they will ever pay.

Please all welcome Teemu I. Yliselä as contributor. He has direct access to the main submit script, and you should begin seeing more activity from the both of us. I'm still searching for one or more other contributors, especially for the Aminet Files and Websites sections. I'm also accepting email submissions again, but I'd really prefer if you could use the Unmoderated section instead. The Notify script is also being used more often again. I'm at around 715 subscribers, down from an all-time hight of about 750.

I'm looking for a few people to actively contribute to ANN's news section. Also wanted are dedicated people to add websites, recent Aminet uploads and editorials. Given the situation (lack of advertisers), financial rewards are currently not possible. Please apply via email.

ANN will go through some massive changes over the next few weeks. I'll be changing the visual style a bit, modify the site structure and news presentation, and search for moderators and contributors. In the current situation, with all the problems I've been facing, I could either close down ANN or reconsider everything and aim for something higher, better. I've decided to try the later.

I'll leave for Lithuania tomorrow morning, and only return on Monday evening. That means no updates until then, possibly even longer.

The quality of ANN's news service has been going down a lot lately, and I'm the one to blame. Please accept my sincerest apologies, but please also understand that a number of things are preventing me from having the right motivation to update this site - or use a computer at all, for that matter. I've always been very open about this site and what is going on behind the scenes, and right now I can just say that I've been wondering lately for how long I can keep ANN going in its current state, or whether I shouldn't just abandon it altogether. Granted, I'm still making enough money to cover my Internet connection and server bills, but that's pretty much the only reason that's left. And even then, the revenue is going down all the time, and will probably barely reach 100$ this month.

But you're probably all enjoying the summer away from your computers anyway, and won't care too much about this.

[Motd] Hard disk won't spin upANN.lu

I think I killed my desktop's hard disk. The computer is typically running all the time, but on Saturday I switched it off for the first time in months. When I switched it back on an hour later, the hard disk, an 8 GB Samsung unit, wouldn't spin up again. The BIOS doesn't recognise it anymore, and I can't hear a single sound from it if I switch on, or reset, the machine. Does anyone have any useful suggestions as to what I could possibly do, apart from just rushing out and getting a more reliable IBM drive and starting from scratch? Update 13-Jul-2000: It seems to be working again. I like problems that just resolve themselves when ignored for a week.
[Motd] Ratings now availableANN.lu

Even though I ought to have updated my resume/CV and applied for a new job, this evening I quickly hacked together a ratings system for any news article posted on ANN. You can vote, and therefore voice your opinion, on every article; the possible votes being the numbers 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 the best. In the future, this system might be expanded to reduce the size of unimportant and off-topic postings, or perhaps even to hide them altogether, and to emphasize on the more important and relevants news items.

Any comments, ideas or suggestions?

[Motd] Update 2ANN.lu

OK, I still didn't get around to doing a regular update. What is worrying me right now is the disrespect of several rules by some people submitting news or adding comments. I do not like seeing people pretend to be somebody else, people insulting others, using vulgar language, or otherwise posting illegal or immoral statements. I think that before I implement anything else in ANN's scripts, that a rating system is needed. Until then, I am forced to remove any content that is in direct violation of applicable laws or good taste. Sadly some people don't seem to be able to moderate themselves, so I'll have to moderate them.
