[Motd] RFC... Return to moderated, new categories? | ANN.lu |
Posted on 18-Mar-2002 14:03 GMT by Christian Kemp | 28 comments View flat View list |
I suppose a return to moderated operation on ANN has long been overdue, so I'm considering that for the near future, hopefully with the support of the moderators. It has also become clear that a lot of people want to discuss industry news that might or might not relate to the Amiga - but there has been an equal amount of people complaining about such postings. Therefore, a "generic news" category might become necessary. Equally, quite a few voices have requested forums, while others have complained about the Unmoderated section being used as such. Therefore, a "forum" category seems logical. What do you think?

[Motd] Back from the US... | ANN.lu |
Posted on 17-Mar-2002 16:25 GMT by Christian Kemp | 15 comments View flat View list |
After touring the US for two weeks, I'm now safely back home. And I must say at first sight I'm pleasantly surprised: little abuse, lots of postings and discussions, 175,000 pageviews in just two weeks... heck, even The Register linked to ANN :) Now, jetlag, St. Patrick's Day, a pretty drastic change at work and the last-week-of-March trip to Lanzarote may still keep me occupied for a while, but I will definitely try to be around more often again. And who knows, some day I might even announce site and script updates again, instead of just rambling about unrelated stuff :)

[Motd] This is (was ?) a news site | ANN.lu |

I can not beleive how much posts I had to delete these last days.
This site is not a message board. There are some amiga sites/mailing lists for that. Anyone that will not comply with posts guidelines will have his post deleted. I may also give up and let the site become a big mess with insults, message board, ads, whatever. I understand better Christian frustrations and would certainly have given up a long time ago if I was him. If you really want to help just post real news, just find some that can bring interest for the other ann users. I understand that being an Amigan can be frustrating but it is also true for us.

[Motd] Calling 172.188.44.191... | ANN.lu |

Could the person at IP address 172.188.44.191 please email me instead of trying to get a point (and then, what point?) across on ANN by posting crap once every hour...?

[Updated] I will be away for three weeks in March. While Christophe and Teemu have moderator access to delete submissions that violate one or more guidelines, there is no way I can guarantee a smooth operation of what essentially is an open news forum. I might be able to check in once or twice, but other than that, I will be travelling without Internet access. If there is anything you want to let me know, please contact me before Friday.

[Motd] MOTD: New submission guidelines | ANN.lu |
Posted on 14-Feb-2002 10:18 GMT by Christian Kemp | 10 comments View flat View list |
There are new submission guidelines for user-contributed news / comments / rumours / discussions. In the future, there will be more rigid checks, and items not complying with these guidelines might be edited or removed. One common mistake is that people merely post URLs instead of using HTML markup for links.

This is just a friendly reminder that ANN is primarily a news / rumour / discussion site and not just a platform for promotion of other websites / companies / organisations. I would therefore ask people to refrain from posting multiple mentions of their website projects in short timespans. Furthermore, I suggest that commercial entities at least consider running a paid advertisement to announce new products or sell existing ones, instead of just benefitting from ANN's traffic and never investing anything back into the sites that help keep their target audience around...

Today, I tracked over one hundred attempts of abuse on ANN. I've been working on the filters and editing mechanisms for over four hours. Maintaining ANN is turning into real work, and all I see are tasks that I despise. This one individual, and the general attitude on ANN lately, is alienating visitors and making this site a horrible place to be. Most of what I see is insults and blind advocacy... I'm tired... And I can just see the negative comments again, in reply to me posting this...

ANN is a Amiga News site. A lot of ANN users complain about recent posts that have nothing to do with news. In the last weeks I had to delete a lot of these posts. I will even go further to avoid any "f#@& xxx" "XOS is better than YOS" "where can I find blablabla posts". I encourage you to post real news and to never answer to any starting flamewar. ANN success is thanks to you guys so help us to keep it clean.
