It seems I cannot even be away for 4 days without some sick bastard trying to post crap on ANN and ruin it for everyone. Sometimes, I really wonder if it's worth the time, money and effort to keep the site going.

In November, ann.lu served 674,488 successful requests, delivering about 290,000 pageviews to 38,617 distinct hosts. Compared to last month's all time high of pageviews, this is once again a 40% increase. Overall, 4.624 Gbytes of (compressed) data were transferred. 514,684 requests came from Windows-based browsers, only 70,912 from Amiga browsers (not considering spoofing). For the first time in quite a few months, I've also been able to fill both ad spots with advertisements. Now, if I could only find a way to make a few posters use more English, and less swearing, I would be completely happy with where ANN is going, even if I haven't been involved a lot lately, due to work and other commitments. So I guess this is yet another "thank you" to everybody who keeps ANN and its community going.

[Motd] Record month / moderators | ANN.lu |
Posted on 01-Nov-2001 15:08 GMT by Christian Kemp | 15 comments View flat View list |
Last month ANN.lu recorded the most pageviews in a month since it came to life almost five years ago, tracking 435,695 successful requests and about 207,000 pageviews for 30,904 distinct hosts, totalling over 3 GB of bandwidth (mod/gzip'ed on HTTP/1.1-compliant browsers). Thanks for visiting and contributing!
On this occasion, I'd also like to welcome back Teemu I. Yliselä as moderator. Once Christophe Decanini has settled down in his new house over in the US, I hope to have him back on the team, too.

[Motd] Just because you can... | ANN.lu |

Many complaints were voiced and people are thinking that ANN's quality is degrading because of the display of unmoderated postings on the main page. And this is certainly not what I intended. Posting on the main page has not been opened up to allow people to insult, or be troublemakers. "Just because you can, does not mean you should." I'd like to ask posters to refrain from posting jokes, sarcastic remarks, or unfounded/unproven criticisms. When posting, I'd prefer people to apply common sense rather than limit them with explicit restrictions. Thank you for your cooperation.

[Motd] MOTD 05/Oct/01 : Definately too many MOTD's :) | ANN.lu |

I fixed the poll script, thanks to Luca for letting me know (please always report when things you think should be working do not). Things are pretty busy around here, and I just wanted to remind people to remain civilised. Also, I've always tried to target the widest possible audience, so if you think ANN is evolving too much into one direction, please let me know in the comments, or by mail. As a final note for today, I'm thinking of attending the Cologne or London shows (two hours by car or eight hours by train, respectively), since I was thinking it might be nice to meet some people in person... Comments, anyone?

User contributions have picked up now, after I stepped on my soap box and asked all of you to contribute more. Thanks. Tonight, I implemented a few minor modifications in the comments script, and did a loading-time analysis, discovering that ANN has become really lightweight, at about 38k for the main page, compared to amiga-news.de's 73k or amiga.org's 85k. Please discuss. :)

[Motd] Stepping on my soap box | ANN.lu |
Posted on 02-Oct-2001 19:18 GMT by Christian Kemp | 0 comments |
In three days, no article and only one or two comments have been posted on ANN. While I am still committed to ANN, it's getting increasingly difficult to find contributors, sponsors and visitors, and over the past months and years, I had to re-evaluate my view on more than one of these aspects. My job guarantees a certain financial independence, but evening courses further restrict my free time. As such, there is no way ANN can survive without user interaction.
In other words, ANN requires news submissions on all topics Amiga, and a community to discuss whatever is going on. The site needs to reach the largest possible audience in this niche, and as such I will be working on centering the site around the content, not any pretty pictures.
If I haven't been clear enough already: Please participate! Submit news items. Write articles. Suggest polls. Report bugs. Spread the word about the site. Do whatever you think is necessary to make this site a likeable and liveable virtual home on the Internet for all things Amiga (and beyond)...
I'm stepping off my soap box now. Now is your turn. :)

As you might have noticed, I modified the appearance of the navigation bar. Other changes were made on the search page and in the poll script. But most importantly, the main page now displays "Unmoderated" news items by default. I feel this is a better choice than no updates for days (or weeks, perhaps).

[Motd] Posting re-activated ; ANN v3 delayed | ANN.lu |
Posted on 17-Sep-2001 20:50 GMT by Christian Kemp | 9 comments View flat View list |
I realised that in the short term, it would be better to create a quick fix for the 1,000,000,000 second misbehaviour in ANN's scripts, rather than wait for a complete rewrite to fix the conceptual mistakes I made in the v2 revision. As such, ANN is fully online again after a week of inactivity, and in the future, I will be working on the v3 scripts in my spare time without affecting ANN's normal operation. As for a progress report, I'm afraid I'm already behind schedule, but I suppose these things can happen in a one-person project... Please discuss. :)
