I am currently being threatened by my former employer (they are "compelled [to] take action against [me]") for the way I am running ANN, and how this allegedly violates my employment contract with them ("interfere _in any manner_ with any business relationship between the Company and any of its customers or business partners"). This might entail drastic changes to the relative freedom of speech ANN has always allowed its visitors, or ANN might close down altogether. Updated 10:00 CET.

Just a short note: I've noticed that an increasing number of people are using anonymizer URLs or CGI proxies when postings news items. Depending on the time of the day, my current work load, and how much time I have to do moderation tasks (currently not a lot), such items are very likely to be removed, rather than edited. A lot of these links just flat out don't work for anyone other than the person submitting the news item, and as such the quick fix is to just delete the entire item, rather than wait for the end of the day to be able to edit, and in the meanwhile have hundreds of people click on a link that doesn't work...

Some of you might be aware that I signed a full-time employment contract with Genesi S.à.r.l. in Luxembourg to start December 15th 2003. I didn't make an official announcement on ANN because I didn't plan (and expect) it to change anything as far as ANN was/is concerned. I spent most of January 2004 telecommuting from the United States, but unfortunately, not everything worked out the way I had expected it to, and yesterday I handed in my resignation with Genesi. Next Monday, I will be starting at a new job in Luxembourg. Once more, this should not influence ANN in any major way, except that my available time might be more limited, and I will probably not be able to do any moderations or updates during the day.

I'm happy to announce that ANN.lu reached an agreement with Hyperion for the banner space on the vertical navigation bar. The deal is exclusive and long-term, and ANN's banner spaces are once again fully booked. Advertisement banners and Paypal donations ensure the long-term survival of ANN.lu, so I am fortunate to have such strong partnerships with KDH-Datentechnik, Vesalia and now Hyperion. I am also grateful for the select few individuals who donated money via Paypal. Thanks!

Who's going to the Benelux Amiga Show/Benelux Pegasos Show this weekend? If I'm going (and it looks like I might :), I want to know when the most people will be present...

Also, in today's news: I uploaded a new search script which should behave better in some ways, and should have few speed improvements. However, bear in mind that it still has to search up to 6700 news items, and is running in a shared hosting environment, so results can't be instant.

I just added a new Events category that is supposed to hold (a) announcements about shows or events and (b) reports from shows or events, as well a (c) anything related to this. The category is displayed by default, but if you have cookies or bookmarks over-riding that you might want to update your settings.

On an unrelated topic, I'm looking for a low-profile (half-height) PCI graphics card, capable of delivering 1280x1024 in 32bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of emotions involved in the last week threads. I would like people to calm down a little bit and refrain to post their feelings as news items.
I would also like people to respect more each other. We don't need the personal attacks, insults and so on.
My time to moderate is limited and if these things persist I may have to remove more posts (and to simplify the job full threads) involving trolling, flames, insults and so on.

Thank you for your understanding.

Here's a small update of what's happening (mostly behind the scenes) at ANN.lu. I rewrote most of the comments scripts last week, and apart from a few bugs already fixed and a few remaining glitches, it seems to work fairly well. The basic version of a trusted user system for signing comments also introduced last week seems to work well, although there's no frontend (or firm decision on how that should look) for general user registrations yet. I'm currently working on a "recently posted comments" script that does, in the first place, allow me to monitor comments more closely, and might later on be made available to trusted visitors or premium visitors (premium users being those who contribute(d) to ANN.lu in one way or another). As for visitor numbers, ANN has this month been serving approximately 12,000 pages a day to between 2000 and 2500 unique IPs in any 24 hour span.

This is just a friendly reminder to all regulars of the comments section that profanity, personal insults and postings that otherwise violate ANN's guidelines can and will be deleted. Today, I implemented code to allow Christope and Teemu to moderate comments, which should ensure stricter enforcement of the posting guidelines and eliminate some of the noise.

I'm also working on a "trusted user" system, that would allow regular visitors to authenticate with me and have their name or nickname reserved. This will be optional. Since this is still work-in-prgress, comments on this subject are most welcome - especially on how the authentication could work.

There have not been a lot of MOTD messages over the last few months. This time around, I'd like to announce that I wrote and installed a new ad system today. You shouldn't notice much of a difference, apart from some short server outages earlier on tonight. Oh, and there's a new banner, visible in the navigation bar on the right.

Apart from that, my life has been pretty busy; working fulltime, training most days of the week and [this might come as a surprise] working on script updates on a local Apache server. They should eventually be available online for further testing, but now might be the time to make requests for new features. :)

HTML4/CSS support is on my list, and won't disappear, so start bugging Amiga browser authors to finally support these long-established standards. :) Visitors will still be able to use all kinds of browsers, in fact even more so than before, it's just that the layout might look more primitive on HTML 2/3.2 browsers (read: there will be an almost complete seperation of content and layout, the latter mostly implemented via Cascading Stylesheets).

For reasons I'm not quite sure of, ANN was not accessible from sometime early this morning to around 9pm CET. The solutions was trivial (a simple chmod), but I'm not sure what could possibly have changed access permissions in the first place.

In unrelated news, ANN recently recorded the 5,000th posting and 3.5 million graphical visitors. In September, there were about 361,000 requests for pages.

I'm back from a track&field meeting in Tallinn (EST) - which is why there were no updates and no article moderation on ANN inbetween Friday and today.

Also, I'd like to emphasize a point that has recently arisen in the comments section: while I dislike the idea of strict moderation and removal of articles and comments, something needs to be done to stop a few people from turning any thread into a flamefest (and a bad one, at that), and ruin the visiting experience for everybody else. I will therefore adopt a slightly stricter moderation policy - starting with informal warnings, and pursuing other options if these do not yield positive results (Possibilities for this would be manual removal of comments, the possibility to filter anonymous posters or certain IP ranges, or have an ignore list. Alas, the last three would require a rewrite of the comments system and possibly the implementation of user accounts, which would be a massive task. And comments?)

Despite being wildly inaccurate and not representative of actual pageviews, it's still worthwhile noting that ANN's graphical counter recently crossed the 3-million mark. Meanwhile, my server logs indicate that about 12,500 pages are displayed every day, to over 40,000 distinct hosts this month. Since ANN went dynamic in 1998, over 4500 items and over 58,000 comments have been posted.

In mostly unrelated news, I had to adopt the flat view of the comments script to only serve ten pages at a time. With individual items getting up to 500 comments at times, this was a necessary step to maintain tolerable loading times.

Starting April 21st, Unmoderated and Forum categories are no longer being displayed on ANN's main page by default, but need to be "opted in" - either by manually clicking on the relevant link, by changing your preferences and bookmarking the resulting page, or by saving the preferences in a cookie. What this also means is that you might need to manually review the Unmoderated and Forum sections before submitting any news to avoid double posts. Normally, postings that comply with posting guidelines are moved from Unmoderated to a more relevant category within a few hours. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation, and please let me know if you encounter any problems or need additional explanation or help.

This afternoon, I cleaned up the HTML code a bit (it now passes "HTML 4.01 transitional" validation) and added a new "forum" category into which any new postings will be moved when they don't really fit into other categories.
Traffic-wise, ANN received about 725,000 hits and delivered over 321,000 pageviews to almost 45,000 distinct hosts in the first 30 days of March.

I suppose a return to moderated operation on ANN has long been overdue, so I'm considering that for the near future, hopefully with the support of the moderators. It has also become clear that a lot of people want to discuss industry news that might or might not relate to the Amiga - but there has been an equal amount of people complaining about such postings. Therefore, a "generic news" category might become necessary. Equally, quite a few voices have requested forums, while others have complained about the Unmoderated section being used as such. Therefore, a "forum" category seems logical. What do you think?

Anyone that will not comply with posts guidelines will have his post deleted. I may also give up and let the site become a big mess with insults, message board, ads, whatever. I understand better Christian frustrations and would certainly have given up a long time ago if I was him. This is just a friendly reminder that ANN is primarily a news / rumour / discussion site and not just a platform for promotion of other websites / companies / organisations. I would therefore ask people to refrain from posting multiple mentions of their website projects in short timespans. Furthermore, I suggest that commercial entities at least consider running a paid advertisement to announce new products or sell existing ones, instead of just benefitting from ANN's traffic and never investing anything back into the sites that help keep their target audience around...

In November, ann.lu served 674,488 successful requests, delivering about 290,000 pageviews to 38,617 distinct hosts. Compared to last month's all time high of pageviews, this is once again a 40% increase. Overall, 4.624 Gbytes of (compressed) data were transferred. 514,684 requests came from Windows-based browsers, only 70,912 from Amiga browsers (not considering spoofing). For the first time in quite a few months, I've also been able to fill both ad spots with advertisements. Now, if I could only find a way to make a few posters use more English, and less swearing, I would be completely happy with where ANN is going, even if I haven't been involved a lot lately, due to work and other commitments. So I guess this is yet another "thank you" to everybody who keeps ANN and its community going.

Many complaints were voiced and people are thinking that ANN's quality is degrading because of the display of unmoderated postings on the main page. And this is certainly not what I intended. Posting on the main page has not been opened up to allow people to insult, or be troublemakers. "Just because you can, does not mean you should." I'd like to ask posters to refrain from posting jokes, sarcastic remarks, or unfounded/unproven criticisms. When posting, I'd prefer people to apply common sense rather than limit them with explicit restrictions. Thank you for your cooperation.

Please discuss. :)

Posted on 02-Oct-2001 19:18 GMT by Christian Kemp0 comments
In three days, no article and only one or two comments have been posted on ANN. While I am still committed to ANN, it's getting increasingly difficult to find contributors, sponsors and visitors, and over the past months and years, I had to re-evaluate my view on more than one of these aspects. My job guarantees a certain financial independence, but evening courses further restrict my free time. As such, there is no way ANN can survive without user interaction.

In other words, ANN requires news submissions on all topics Amiga, and a community to discuss whatever is going on. The site needs to reach the largest possible audience in this niche, and as such I will be working on centering the site around the content, not any pretty pictures.

If I haven't been clear enough already: Please participate! Submit news items. Write articles. Suggest polls. Report bugs. Spread the word about the site. Do whatever you think is necessary to make this site a likeable and liveable virtual home on the Internet for all things Amiga (and beyond)...

I'm stepping off my soap box now. Now is your turn. :)

I realised that in the short term, it would be better to create a quick fix for the 1,000,000,000 second misbehaviour in ANN's scripts, rather than wait for a complete rewrite to fix the conceptual mistakes I made in the v2 revision. As such, ANN is fully online again after a week of inactivity, and in the future, I will be working on the v3 scripts in my spare time without affecting ANN's normal operation. As for a progress report, I'm afraid I'm already behind schedule, but I suppose these things can happen in a one-person project... Please discuss. :)
