Last month ANN.lu recorded the most pageviews in a month since it came to life almost five years ago, tracking 435,695 successful requests and about 207,000 pageviews for 30,904 distinct hosts, totalling over 3 GB of bandwidth (mod/gzip'ed on HTTP/1.1-compliant browsers). Thanks for visiting and contributing!|
On this occasion, I'd also like to welcome back Teemu I. Yliselš as moderator. Once Christophe Decanini has settled down in his new house over in the US, I hope to have him back on the team, too.

|I just hope you don't really plan to make the users have to log-in before they're allowed to add comments. Okay, some of the anonymous comments maybe annoying - but on the other hand sometimes that way we get infos by someone who knows something interesting he isn't allowed to spread or let it be just that he'd had to face other disadvantages if he'd post it by his real name. So keeping ANN open for everyone is not only more convenient for us (no need to register and login first), but also we're able to get more information - and you're able to get more visitors on your page.|

|In reply to Comment 8 (Martin Heine):|
I don't plan to restrict access to ANN in any way. Some day, I might get around to writing some code that implements some feature to give more weight to comments that are posted by verified users, or more clearly mark content that should be taken with a grain of salt, but I don't plan to do anything like the Slashdot moderation or other, even more restricted, systems.

I'd like that only registered users can post news items... comments should be open I guess. Also, a tree view of comments and their replies would be interesting, and could also limit the bandwidth (no longer have to load the full comments page).
Maybe an option for registered users to tick certain news items as 'read' (no longer display) and others as 'interesting', so that he can easily follow further discussion. I'm aware this is alot of work, so don't feel obligated :)

|(Doing my best to get the posting levels up!)|
Nice to see things going well, hope the rewrite is coming along nicely, if slowly.
I agree that a nested posting style would be a nice way to read comments as well. Makes discussions much easier to follow. Erm, and give people the option of registering, but not for posting, but required for new stories.

I'll second the motion for threaded posts, a la something like Network
54's forums. As for Logins, maybe for starting a thread, but not for
posting comments, if only becuase some sites (eg barbelith.com) put me
right off going on to read (just laziness on my part though!)
