Even though I ought to have updated my resume/CV and applied for a new job, this evening I quickly hacked together a ratings system for any news article posted on ANN. You can vote, and therefore voice your opinion, on every article; the possible votes being the numbers 1 to 5, 1 being the worst and 5 the best. In the future, this system might be expanded to reduce the size of unimportant and off-topic postings, or perhaps even to hide them altogether, and to emphasize on the more important and relevants news items.
Any comments, ideas or suggestions?

I do have to whine that the confirmation screen is annoying. Maybe the Amiga browsers handle caching better, but I'm stuck using IE for the summer and Netscape tends to be even worse- it takes quite a while for the main page to reparse after loading. I don't know if dynamically adding a box at the top of the main page that says "You voted!" would be feasible, but it'd be a lot faster, since I wouldn't have to click back. Even a popup window (Geocities style) wouldn't really be as annoying.
Or maybe this is an option, but I've been too lazy to examine whatever login/cookie-based customization options ANN has, and I travel between so many different boxes over the course of my life that I generally try to get used to the default interface on things. :) |
