Here's a copy&paste from Czech Amiga News. Roger Wyatt is quoted as saying Bill McEwean's after dinner talk and demonstration was stunning in its sweep, complexity, and scope. Here are a few highlights:
  • Newtek has placed its source code for the Toaster and Flyer into Open Source status. See www.toaster.amiga.org for details.
  • Greenboy of the Phoenix Group joined Amiga's Gary Peake on stage to shake hands and announce that there was no split in the Amiga community. Phoenix and Amiga are working together.
  • Sun is a strategic partner of Amiga.
  • Bill McEwen: "Our success will be the embrase of Java." Expect to see many Java apps for Amiga.
  • Red Hat is another strategic partner. So is Corel. Amiga will be the common consumer application layer for 26 different versions of Linux.
  • The new Amiga developer environment will run on top of a Red Hat Linux base and foundation.
  • Amiga will be the common consumer interface for Corel Linux apps.
  • Thus Amiga will provide Java and Linux with a common interface. Amiga will be extensibile running on cell phones to servers.
  • 117 current Amiga titles are being ported to the Tao based New Amiga OS.
  • Espial is providing an 800k java web browser for New Amiga.
  • There will be a new version of Scala for the new OS.
  • Animators from Disney provided the conceptual designs for the look of the new hardware reference designs. They are beautiful. They will be going up soon on the Amiga website. Disney used over 500 Amigas to produce computer animation for their films.
  • Amiga is aligned with an array of consumer electronic firms including Sony, JVC, and others.
  • There will be an upcoming announcement regarding Amiga participation in a global ISP alliance.
  • In the weeks to come Tech Head Stories will provide both in-depth analysis of the Amiga announcements in streaming video, text, and graphic formats. Stay tuned.
I didn't manage to get a confirmation for all this. Only Czech Amiga News has original coverage, amiga-news.de copied it from there. Moo Bunny seems to be down and amiga.org has nothing on this either. A quick search on comp.sys.amiga.misc also yielded no results.

offered by Collas and Gateway? Now, what makes this excellent news?

So, we're talking about something can run as its own OS on anything from an
appliance to a desktop machine, which can also be inserted as an application
layer on Linux, and provides Java compatibilty - and world-class Java
performance - no matter where and how it's running?
So we will see Amiga working as a user-interface layer on Linux (Does this mean
we can really do away with X? Please let it mean that!) in a way that implements
cleanly on any distro - or any *processor*! - and does the Java thing?
This sounds like great news for the Linux community and better news for Amigans!
It sounds like the whole "let's make a user-friendly Unix by turning it into a
Windows clone" can now go away. We'll just use our Amigas - on whatever bloody
hardware pleases us! - and use Linux when we need a server engine for the big
jobs, or when we need some bit of functionality not yet implemented in the new
Amiga.
If this is true, and actually comes to fruition, I think we are clearly
justified in resorting to the "R" word!

What makes this excellent news is that it may actually happen! A developer's
box is nice. They fact that they got it to the show as promised lends
credibility. If they get the new website up in a few days, and the dev boxes
on sale in a few weeks (as promised) more credibility.
Besides, as I recall, Gateway was going to build the OS on top of Linux, period. This
is an OS hosted on Linux, which can also stand on its own. Big, big difference!

Hmmm,
Looking at amiga.org which has some details... The new os will be hosted initially and go native later on which is good. Linux might be popular, but I probably wouldn't marry her myself.
The Sun thingy I don't really favor at the moment. There's been some talk on aus.computers.amiga with regards to sun getting very nasty(legally) to some sites using the name (Sun) and anything else vaguely Sunlike (have a look on www.sunhelp.org and www.sunrk.com.au). I doubt Amiga would follow that but I'm just anti sun at the moment.
That and the fact that sun boxes are grossly overpriced, but you can't proscute them for that ;)
Otherwise it sounds promising. The dev box is a real cheapy perhaps but not a huge performer I'd think (although the gfx would be perdy) Still well under 500 I'd guess.
Overall it could be worse

It says "Amiga will be the common consumer interface for Corel Linux apps." not
the other way around.
It's a developer box, not an enduser product. What CPU the developer box uses
does not affect what CPU an end user products will have. Elate is CPU-
independant. Read all about it at www.tao-group.com/
Not fast enough ? A developer box isn't about being the latest and hottest,
it's about developing software. Nothing else.
It's certainly not about playinq Quake 3 1600*1200 32bit in 300Hz.
The developerbox is (imho) a well balanced product for both big and small
software developers. Not too expensive and not too underpowered.

: ... A developer box isn't about being the latest and hottest, it's about developing software ...
Yes I totally agree; it's for developing software and also for developing the OS itself. The tao stuff may be a great FOUNDATION, but the REST still needs to be developed. THAT's what the developermachines are about. And people should remember that hardware won't be an important issue in the future; you may use the hardware you need for each specific area of usage. And for this FIRST task (developing the OS, and initial efforts to port existing amiga software) a cheap x86 clone is just great. Low cost makes it affordable to the masses. And this is only the initial HW specification, more (with both higher AND lower price/performance) will most certainly follow.
And by the way, the development of the new amiga hasn't even started. This developermachine is NOT the final product. How could it possibly be, after just weeks of 'development'? And some people on the net are actually asking for *screenshots of the new gui', raving about HW configuration, and stuff like that. Tss tss ...)

I am still confused about the linux/amiga mix. So Amiga will be the
application layer for Linux. Does that mean that in future, we have to
run linux and Amiga as it's windowmanager? And is there going to be a
seperate platform with Amiga in it's core... seperate from linux?
I have heard that there is the linux core and on top of it: Amiga.
I don't really feel like installing linux first and then Amiga. I want
to install the Amiga immediately on top of its hardware.
Or.... did I miss something here?
I can be wrong, you know :-)

Now, the new Amiga isn't a windowmanager.

The new Amiga is based on tao's elate. It can be used BOTH as a stand alone OS, AND it can be used on a host OS. How on earth could you have missed that?!?
: I have heard that there is the linux core and on top of it: Amiga. I don't really feel like installing linux first and then Amiga.
Then don't!! This is only for the first developermachine specification. This is *NOT* (!) the final product. It's not even a real product yet, it is an initial release for developers, so that they can DEVELOP the final product.

Yes, they would. It's farily common knowledge that Gateway had absolutely
no idea what they had - they didn't even know there was a userbase attached
to the system before it was rammed down their throats. And besides, they
haven't exactly "let it go", they still own the patents remember, and the
more Amiga sells, the more Gateway will make in patent royalties.

Let's hope you are right about the final product :-)
I guess the only way to get Scala to run right on the new machine,is
that they have to use some sort of planar display instead of chunky;
if you look at the IBM PPC solution for instance, they are going to
use an AGP chunky display. How on earth can we get horizontal wipes in
good order if we use plain and simple chunky?
In my opinion it's very important to implement planar display and this
cannot be done with the current hardware, even if it's a developer
machine.

I believe it's all rumors, Bill didn't mention any of these partners in the live audio interview.
------------------------ parts I believe in ----------------------
Greenboy of the Phoenix Group joined Amiga's Gary Peake on stage to shake hands and announce that there was no split in the Amiga community. Phoenix and Amiga are working together.
Bill McEwen: "Our success will be the embrase of Java." Expect to see many Java apps for Amiga.
The new Amiga developer environment will run on top of a Red Hat Linux base and foundation.
Espial is providing an 800k java web browser for New Amiga...well that COULD be correct, sounds like an interesting product.
------------------ from the interview ------------------------------
There will be LOTS of announcements in the next weeks.
There are currently 3 teams (diffrent efforts) working on Amiga classic emulation for elate, but Amiga WON'T do anything themself.
Bill hopes Developer systems will be out within 2 weeks.
He was also talking (or was that the interviewer?) about an Amiga cellphone, saying that would be cool...
He also mentioned they had a big problem about staying out of the mainstream press at the moment.
He also mentioned AmigaOS will NOT go opensource.

It all sounds good to me, but has any one worked out how Amiga/Tao are actually going to make any money. Its sounds like users (most likely Linux users) will be running the OS as a replacement for X Windows as supplied with the mentioned 26 Linux distributors. I mean Linux I agree is getting big, but no one is making big money from it.

First and foremost cross platform development systems have been and probably will continue to be used - for instance it is possible to develope MS windows applications in Linux, Playstation games in - MS-Dos - AmigaDOS - or Linux, or develope Amiga apps in any Gnu system - I even saw a dev system for the Amiga that ran under MS-Dos back in the 80's.
Second - I thought the NewTek Video Toaster open source thingy was interesting and all - however there's no information about it anywhere except here... Then I got to thinking - why would you want this source to it? Its hardware specific - I'll bet its written in 68k assembler, and I'll bet it isn't well documented :(.

I am fed up with this "if you disagree with us, you are not part of the community" attitude by amiga. i want amigaos, not some strange tao multi platform thing. i don't care about tao one bit. i can't be the only one who wants to see amigaos survive, but despite this, they claim the amiga community is united and not divided. what total bs. there do exist differnces of opinion, whether they like that or not.
no community doesn't have a group of people that are unhappy or dissatisfied and want something different. if they believe otherwise they are either incredibly misguided or they don't understand the community as well as they claim. instead, people like me, we're just shut out and ignored by amiga and they don't care what we think. amigaos is dead they say, we are wrong, we are not part of the community, we should go away. as far as they are concerned we are not part of the amiga community - we can't be, as afterall, in the community there aparently exists no dissent, there is no disagreement, there are no arguments. if that's their attitude, i don't know why i bother sticking with the amiga. i want to be part of a community, i care about the amiga and i love amigaos! i love my apps and i love my machine, and i enjoy the community feel! but it feels as if i am being shut out by amiga inc. am i no longer part of the amiga community now because amiga say so? when did this happen? :((
if it is still allowed for different opinions and feelings to be valid in the amiga community and for others who feel the same to feel this way, then the community *is* divided, or at least has serious differences of opinion, and amiga's claims that we are all united beyond their vision of the future are false. otherwise, who elects who is a member of the community and who is not? whether or not you agree with amiga inc? is that the test?

In the end effect, they ARE upgrading the AMIGAOS using TAO. To make the OS run
on anything else other than 68k, it needs MAJOR reworking. Then lets add memory
protection and a slew of other things that other OSs take for granted. By the
time you are done hacking the current OS to that level, it would have taken 5+ years
and it would have been easier and quicker to start from scratch and keep in mind
all the features that make the AmigaOS fun to be in. And that is what they are doing.
As far as running legacy programs, things that are still being supported (i.e. there
is code for) will be ported. Things that are orphaned, will minimallistically be run
on UAE or an AROS layer in the new OS (if they get that far, but they seem to be
doing rather well).
So what do we get in the long run? Cheap hardware (no spending $130 on a $10 network
card, or $450 on a $30 video card, or $1000 for something that runs at $100). If you
complain "its PC hardware", look around at what a Hi-Spec Amiga is running. It's
running a PC chipset video card, the RAM and CPU (and sometimes SCSI & video) are up
on a daughter board. It is just using the amiga as IO(mouse keyboard) at that point.
So there isn't much difference. You can choose your Hardware and it will run, but it
will also have appeal enough to get other users to hop back over to the Amiga.
