There are big differences... And set-top-boxes are serious market, too.

I think it is great that Amiga will be running on the set-top boxes. What better to surf the web, check e-mail, play games, etc. Amiga's have been widely used for years now in the cable tv industry to create the "Preview Channel", this is a logical choice to extend it's use into an interactive environment. It wouldn't surprise me if the Preview Channel became interactive with the new Amiga based set-tops to allow all sorts of new programming options, and things we end users have not even thought of. Tired of waiting for it to scroll through all of those channels you don't have or never watch? Program them out! Create a "favorite channels list".
Just imagine having an Amiga based set-top, being able to play the latest "Demo on Demand (tm)" game. At the same time have it serve as the gateway to the internet for all home networked computers and devices. Think of being on the computer and just remembering that you wanted to watch a movie that was about to come on. Simply bring up an interactive "control panel" and select your new networked VCR or recordable DVD to record from the proper channel. All without having to turn on the TV set, VCR, and find the Channel etc. This may seem a bit far-fetched, but I think this is the future of connected home devices. This only scratches the surface of what it could do. Think of MP3's that could be streamed from the internet, managed and played through your home stereo/entertainment system just like the radio. The possibilities are virtually endless.
Sorry, didn't mean to rant....

Whilst today looking for Tao on Suns industry java news I found the
following article dated Jan, 11 2000 accidental:
-- quote
[Infomedia network ] .. announced today that it has selected the Elate(RTM)
Real Time Operating System and the intent™ multimedia content platform by
Tao Group for use in INFOMAX, the company's next generation of advanced set-top
boxes.
-- end quote
http://industry.java.sun.com/javanews/stories/story2/0,1072,21913,00.html
Seems like they found additional value in Amiga's (Elate based) AmiVerse
(and changed the name from INFOMAX to TVision??) as they could just as well
have stayed with Tao Group only ;-)

How come I cannot get infomedia.com on my browser. All i get
is a "Page Loaded" signal with no screen!...Is is because i
cannot handle "flash" and that's all I'll get???
If they are a company, and do have a good product, it is what
Amiga said they would do...i.e. go after horizontal and
vertical markets....
Suppose you could run a program that the set-top boxs Cpu
could run, and still use that same program on the Amiga PDA<
or Amiga desktop...... suppose you could run a Java applet
on the settop...would you need a desktop anymore????
Here's the real cool idea i like...suppose you could export
real full screen video (not QT/AVI/or MOV) and sound,
through the settop and receive it back...instant video teleconferencing,
I mean, if it's true, the Amiverse is starting to get bigger....
now, if only SDK apps, multitask as smoothly the the old AmigaOS...
