junk_mail1@mail.com writes: Apparently Capcom seems to found a way to emulate their games. This will allow gamers to play capcom games on *any* platform available. Regardless of the architecture. It does not mention about "Amiga DE" being used to achieve this. Click here for the link.

Oh come on please! Sega and Nintendo merging and now this!
If there is any truth in it it SHOULD be something to do with Amiga, as if the plan is to run on different processors INCLUDING "PC"s then surely they havent done all the work on their own?!
If this is Amiga related then they should be shouting about it!

I'd just like to point out that Amiga/Tao aren't the only ones making cross platform write-once-run-anywhere software. So,why does everyone always assume an Amiga connection with articles like this. I get sick of seeing the same posts over and over, and all of them say "I didn't see Amiga mentioned, but I bet they're secret partners with Company X". Geez.

hello Chris
Not that I doubt you're right about that there are other companies "making cross platform write-once-run-anywhere software" but could you please mention a few of those.....
I haven't really heard of others than Tao but if you say there are others I would like to know more about them. Please name some of these companies (+ links), thanks in advance.

Hmm - yes, I havent heard of any other companies doing such a user/game/multi-media/scalable system - and certainly not one that runs on every chip under the sun - so come on, who else is really saying they can do this sort of thing?!!!

Virtual machines have been in development at universities for quite some time.

No offense but current JVM technology, and TAO VP are not the same monster.
as I understand it, the overhead is way too high on a normal JVM for it to be a viable write once run anywhere solution. I really cannot see a 3D networkable interactive game running on a console in Java.

They haven't said much about it, but KDE is working on something of a virtual subsystem so that programs written for x86 will work on Alpha chips and vice versa. There are several others out there that don't sound feasible, but then again, how's the Amiga sound to some major PC gamer out there...
Look at it this way, it's all the same class, they just don't know which one to pick as they don't know which is better.

Software/hardware companies just want a tool to bring around an affect, if Amiga were too high profile, their branding would compete and interfere with their partners and confuse customers.
<br>
Educating and bringing added value to something like VHS or Dolby is a massive and expensive process. To the business to business market, that's all amiga is, an enabling technology.

I'd like to know how Capcom is arranging license agreements with Sony,Sega,Nintendo, etc. They'll probably have to pay a license fee to each company for each disc produced. That could be pretty expensive.

VM is different to VP and all the Amiga stuff. VMWare is superb, but nothing to do with what Amiga are doing.
I guess Capcom may be fed up of hardware being tied to software, even Sega have hinted at that for a while!

Java is too slow for 3d games, but it was just an example of write-once-run-anywhere. I think the IBM Daisy project is a better example. And,it's open source.
JVM and Tao are similar in the fact that they are based around a virtual RISC processor, though.

Sega and Capcom are NOT fed up with software being tied to hardware. They are both coin-op manufacturers, and they know more than any PC developer out there now that your software can reach its maximum potential if you DO tie it to hardware! That is why all of their arcade projects are very fast, 60fps, no slowdown/flicker, and translates well to consoles.
The real problem exists in the PC desktop world, and you all know what I mean, so forget about details. I'd want the write-once-run-anywhere technology if I had to write stuff for the PC too!
Sega likes it now that they're realizing the hardware fight is a sinking ship with PS2, GameCube, and (sheesh!) Xbox around the corner. So they have the same strategy as 3DO did.

Well, I agree that until we hear _official_ announcemnets from Capcom or Amiga or any other company that is is all just speculation. But concider a few things that _could_ make it possible:
AmigaDE will currently run on:
Hitachi SH seriesSega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast
Power PCNintendo Cube
MipsNintendo64 (R4000) and Playstation One (R3000A)
x86PC's & X-Box
plus as was stated recently additional cpu's that cannot be mentioned yet(specutlation only) could be PS2 Emotion Engine CPU.
