Here's the homepage of a new open source MPEG4-based video codec, called 3ivX. It's to be launched on December 15th. Amongst other things, Amiga support is promised.

Like what, is making it open-source some magic formula or something? Does this mean that someone from the Amiga community will actually port it? They promise nothign other than that if someone wants to support a platform, they will have the source. So it's not as good as it sounds for Amiga as undoubtedly the release will be for Linux or Win32. |

make sources available, so anyone will be able to play with it<br><br>
Will someone port it to amiga if they wont do this? I will... ;) |

Posted by Rafo on 01-Dec-2000 23:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 4 (Remco Komduur): If it's supposed to read Div/X stuff, then f'get it with current PPCs too.
A Celeron@500MHz WITH CACHE can hardly read a movie smoothly, so we'll have to just wait for a G3/G4 CPU to achieve this correctly. |

---
The latest version of the codec currently works only on MacOS. It is a matter
of days before the Windows, and the *nix version catch up (a previous version
of 3ivX currently compiles and runs on those platforms). The code is extremely
well organized and it will be a piece of cake to support any other platform.
The codec uses QuickTime and there is also a branch running on XAnim. BeOS and
Amiga versions are also under active development.

Obviously a G3/G4 seems to be a minimum, but this is the future, not the old
68k and PPC 603/604 |

Both playback and encoding require mass cpu power.
I don`t think an amiga option, certainly on classic is even worth it.

it plays divx movies just fine with no problem what so ever. |

Otherwise it's usually quite jerky.. I don't think that I get 25fps with this
setup but it's ok nonetheless.
I don't think it would be possible to play them on currents Amiga PPC cards
at a reasonnable speed though.. |

Posted by RAYMOND on 03-Dec-2000 23:00 GMT | I've never played video on a computer so I'm ignorant of most of the issues here, but isn't D.I.V.X. the play per view video disk standard which was utterly shunned by the public - at least here in the U.S.A.? |
