There has been another layout change, and the show/hide feature announced just two days ago fell victim to visitor feedback saying a three column-layout was too wide. The display options are now in the status bar again. In unrelated news, I'll be on holiday from Tuesday to Sunday, but might be able to check in from time to time. Meanwhile, Christophe has access to both the news posting and article deletion scripts.

MOTD 16/Apr/2001 : Comment 1 of 19 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Björn Hagström on 15-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | Hmm, how about moving the "Display xx, files, websites, rant, motd's,
style and unmoderated"-selector to one single row instead of 7 rows ?

Posted by Dave on 15-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 1 (Björn Hagström): They are on 1 row here (NS4.71) so it must be a difference in browser interpretation. IIRC CK tests on IE5 (from the last MOTD)? Either that or the layout has been changed since your comment was added. |

Posted by Björn Hagström on 15-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 2 (Dave): I'm using NS 4.76. It looks kind of okey in NS 6. But 4.76
displays them in a column of 7 rows. And there are no fancy
box around each entry as in NS 6.

making a layout nightmare. |

Posted by Christian Kemp on 15-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | Hmm. Netscape 4.x should be shot. I implemented a workaround, it looks less nice and is more clumsy, but should work better on browsers that don't follow HTML/CSS standards at all (ie. Netscape 4.x). |

Posted by Go0sEmAn on 15-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 6 (Joseph): Damn right! VEry Very Good stuff - but maybe the vote thing should be swapped with the search - You have to scroll down to see the vote box and it is nice to just see it there without having to scroll down (The search box on the other hand provides a specific function for someone wanting to search, so it can be further down)... juts my 2 cents :o) |

While I am pretty flattered by that comment, I have to concede that ANN is far from perfect. There are many things that are still missing, or implemented in a less than optimal way. There are no threaded comments. There's no user authentication system. There's no clever database stuff that allows to run statistics (who wrote how much, what was the highest number of comments for a news item, etc.). The layout is less than optimal. I've always wanted the entire interface to be skinnable, but that would require yet another complete rewrite (but might be worth it, since I absolutely want to implement a decent HTML4/CSS layout but cannot do it right now because too many people visit with old versions of Netscape). Then, there's the top screen, I never seem to be satisfied with it. While I still think the ANN logo looks nice (perhaps because it's not my own design :) I'd prefer a better setup as far as the adverts are concerned. Sadly, that is being dictated by economics, and the dire advertising situation everywhere.
I guess I could go on, and on... :) |

(am I the only one around here browsing on an Amiga? Nah, just my imagination.)

There are a few people left. :) Yesterday, more than half of all requests were coming from MSIE, about one sixth from Netscape, and then IBrowse, AWeb and Voyager (in that order, and IBrowse being the dominant one).
3396: Mozilla (compatible)
1014: Netscape
866: IBrowse
392: Amiga-AWeb
228: AmigaVoyager
Of course this isn't very scientific, since it only takes into account raw server logs of hits (not pageviews or unique IPs). |

Take a look at http://validator.w3.org/. Once your code is correct HTML, there will be no "nightmares" or "bad browsers" or whatever, it will just work. This can save you from a lot of headaches as well as making this place a better one for people with working browsers. |

Posted by Christian Kemp on 16-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 14 (Mark Olsen): Browsers that don't support <SPAN> should be shot. This has little to do with valid HTML on ANN, but rather Netscape's programming team going way over the top on wanting to do their own thing, and mistakingly thinking they still were the standard when they decided to go against what MSIE supported. Why do you think is it that all web designers, not just me, usually complain about still having to support Netscape 4.x? |

Posted by Don Cox on 16-Apr-2001 22:00 GMT | In reply to Comment 11 (Christian Kemp): Doesn't the spoofing in Voyager make these figures meaningless?
I assume that if Voyager is set to spoof as Mozilla, any time I visit
will just count as Mozilla.
It looks good under the latest Voyager, anyway. |

And no, you don't have to support browser A's variant of HTML or browser B's variant of HTML. Just use HTML, and it will work, no more need to worry if it will work in browser A, B or C |
