Jarmo Laakkonen writes: H&P is proud to announce the availability of Boing Bag 2 for AmigaOS 3.9
OS 3.9: Boing Bag 2 available now!

20. March 2002: H&P is proud to announce the availability of Boing Bag 2 for AmigaOS 3.9. Boing Bag 3.9-2 contains many bug fixes, small enhancement and new features in the areas multimedia (AMPlifier, PlayCD, sound datatype), shell, Workbench (Find, AsyncWB, UnArc, XAD v10), ReAction and harddisk support. The Boing Bag is delivered in three parts: The main archive with all the files needed to update AmigaOS 3.9, the translations into different languages and the contributions (CDDB library, OpenURL, ClassAction). We want to thank all people that made it possible.

Please download at least the main archive and the translation(s) for the language(s) you desire. The contributions are optional.

Note: This Update requires AmigaOS 3.9 with Boing Bag 1. AmigaOS XL users can install the Boing Bag 2 directly.

Well, sales have picked up a bit recently, and some issues that needed fixing have also come to light, so it's not THAT much of a surprise.
Besides, the fact that H&P were preparing BB2 has been public knowledge for a while now.

The problem is that the Updater exe not only unzips the boing bag archive, it also writes files anywhere on the SYS: partition without asking for confirmation (if it behaves like the BB1, that is).
Maybe I should try an assign SYS: SomeSafePlace: before running it...

This was a nice surprise :).
A mixed bag of comments:
My guess is that is this effort has partly been made with OS 4.0 in mind,
there are a lot small refinements and enhancements that really should have
been part of OS 3.9, had H&P had more than 1 month to complete the OS update :).
H&P has made Reaction GUIs for AMPlifier and Benchtrash, and a new GUI for
Find. I guess these will go towards making the OS 4.0 a pleasureable experience :)
There are a lot a stuff that I would have found useful back when I actually
owned an Amiga:
- Boot menu in 31 kHZ (no flicker fixer in A4000 with RTG gfxcard...)
- New exec! (Could this be Harry Pirunen's code, exec44? Very likely.
Complete with ShapeShifter initializtion code.. :))
Also it's nice to see that they've been trying to integrate stuff that's been
available on Aminet for about a decade now :) :
- Picture datatype prefs program!
- Sound datatype can now use AHI :) (wow, at last)...
There are many other goodies in the package that I won't mention.
But all in all I have to say that this update has implemented features
that are long overdue...

All credit to those contributors of AmigaOS 3.9. They've come up with
another welcome surprise.
These updates must cost a pretty penny and take a fair chunk of
development time.. I hope H&P are working with Hyperion so that all of
this new code can be re-used partially in OS 4.x
We need to consolidate on every development in the Amiga world and
every development should be a positive step forward- abuilding block
for the future. If H&P are off developing the OS in a different
direction to Hyperion & co. this would be a sad waste of resources...
Anyway, thanks for another good update H&P!! It's appreciated.

You can unpack them elsewhere too by typing for example: C/Updater upadatefile RAM: and then copy files on your system. I did the installation in this way.. only thing was to check some protection bits, because some files were missing +e after unpacking.

Problems here.
I installed and the installation went fine. But when booting (cold and warm) it just stops loading stuff at the moment when it's suppose to load the background piccy (at least I think it should come up next). I'm using warpjpeg datatype. The screen won't update, I can just draw emptiness with a popup window (MCX SW requester). Wassup? Maybe I should remove the new romupdate file and try again? Not now though..too tired.

Time to set up net access on the CD32 and get BB1 & 2.
And that rhymes, that does.
Seriously, since putting 3.5 on the CD32, I`ve had a problem reading CDs from the built in CD-ROM drive. 3.1 is fine, but something changed in 3.5 and 3.5BB1, and it was still there in 3.9. Trying to copy any file from a CD in Workbench results in a 'Packet Not found' error. Copying from the Shell is fine, as is reading copying stuff off with the Installer or just reading files. So odd. I was going to write out a bug report but never got 'round to it...I really hope its fixed, or they do a BB3.

It was a real struggle to get 3.1->3.9 on my A1200 though (with an old 8x IDE drive). The boot disk didn't work properly and I had to fix it myself. Now I get these packet errors every now and then - also when I try to open amigaguide and text documents. I think I'll go try a different drive to see if that helps.

You can do and write anything you want, but the vast majority of AmigaOS people
come here to read/report about INTERESTING stuff. If someone has a problem with the

We are all trying to keep Amiga alive here, OS, spirit and community and the ONLY
thing you do is whine whine whine.
And now I'm whining because of you ! :)
I personnaly have no problem at all if people use an emulator likes it is supposed to be.
But doing for example 68k versions of games that would ONLY run on emulators and not on the
real 68k is an INSULT to the REAL Amiga user who bought an 060/PCI/Voodoo3 or whatever
and can't even play it.

There are no 'emu-freaks', there are only realistic people who think going PPC-only is not a very smart move.

The problem is you can't keep the Amiga alive by limiting the userbase to the few who want to risc buying expensive custom PPC hardware.

The pro-x86 crew have suggested API compatibility across x86 and PPC. We have *no* problem with PPC hardware/software, we only ask for aknowedgement of Amiga-x86. But as Hyperion hates x86 so much, they prefer to split the community.
I don't see how anyone developing for Amithlon should even try to support PPC solutions, as they won't be able to count on any support anyway.
>But that doesn't worry you, you only care about yourself.
You are the ones only wanting PPC... We want both PPC and x86.

Nice pun there: risc, PPC.
What does worry me is that as more developers use Amithlon or XL they'll think to themselves:
"Doing a PPC version is too much hassle, I'll just stick to the 68k version since it's really fast anyway"
THAT'S the problem I have with Amithlon/XL

And to the poster who 'lost' his OS3.9 CD, may I 'take' your Amiga if mine

That would be unrealistic people... PPC is the only way to go IMHO. 68K is stone dead and x86 is a big NO NO NO, both because of the architecture, it sucks, and Microsoft buisness practices.
>The problem is you can't keep the Amiga alive by limiting the userbase to the >few who want to risc buying expensive custom PPC hardware.
Its not custom ppc hardware, its a standard PPC atx motherboard, with a standard PPC northbridge, a standard southbridge, standard agp and pci slots. There is no custom logic, just standard components. It will boot Linux and all the *BSD versions when they are ported.
Since it became possible to order the board I've seen quite alot of posts from people who either will buy the board or who, like myself, have already ordered it. This is the future of Amiga, not emulation on x86.
>The pro-x86 crew have suggested API compatibility across x86 and PPC. We have >*no* problem with PPC hardware/software, we only ask for aknowedgement of >Amiga-x86. But as Hyperion hates x86 so much, they prefer to split the >community.
Hyperion are just realistic. They know there is no competing with Microsoft in the x86 market. On PPC they have a chance to succeed.

Rik, if AOS4 and the AmigaOneG3-SE are as superior as the hype says they are, what the hell are you worried about? Surely developers will flock to the new system and no one will develop for 68k any more.
