Anyone else here planning on getting a MOS system -and- an A1?

Yes really. Ask Titan-Computer. The MorphOS version isnt even started yet (or if it is then it's in very early stages). You need to have an completed OS and display drivers before you can port a game, you know...
I didnt say it would look any different running on the Pegasos, nor do I have anything against the Pegasos (in fact I intend to buy one) I just think its a bit misleading to say these shots are from the game running on MorphOS when they're from the Mac version...
Why do you think they keep using Hyperion's Quake2 port to demonstrate the Pegasos/MorphOS whenever they have public demonstrations? cos theres nothing else to run on it.

the os is fully running : i saw it from my eyes at bordeaux

if quake2 run on it, it mean that the os is complete and that the gfx drivers exists :P
every modern games(rtg) run on it, there's only a few(badly coded or custom chips dependent) which dont
instead of saying things which are false, you should better give a try to morphos ;)

Well, I'm not saying that you are wrong. I just thought it was kind of strange that you knew all that, when Titan doesn't mention anything about mac, nor the development status. But perhaps they just forgot to put it out on their website and you actually called them yourself ...
But one thing is for sure, Morph OS is ready enough to run games and apps. There are plenty of examples of that, including Hyperions Quake2 port. No problems with the display drivers there! And it seems to be very easy to port old amiga 68k apps to the new mos/ppc platform, as I mentioned in another thread (http://www.ann.lu/comments2.cgi?view=1026068716&category=news&start=151#message190 ). There are many examples of that too. Porting apps from other platforms to pegasos/mos will hardly be any more difficult than porting them to the old 68k amiga, rather the opposite. No old legacies to worry about, etc.

Well, you have a point, but since pegasos can run the same hardware you run in your PC (the 'only' thing you need is drivers and a API that is comparable to DirectX 8), quite much depends on the game programmers. If you program an ugly game, it will still be ugly whatever hardware you are using, on whatever platform. But the driver/API is quite an issue, I know. Amithlon's approach (using linux drivers) is quite interesting ...

Ah, I didnĀ“t look at the page title. I rarely do. But on the same page (under the picture) it reads 'The Multiplayer Tactic Shooter for MorphOS!' (although the text seems to be in black color on IE6 for some reason), and if you look at the page title on the page where the actual pictures resides (http://www.titan-computer.com/ami/ragehard/screens.html) you see that it says 'Rage Hard Alpha 0.4'. So I guess the game is in an early stage, but to me it definitely looks like the PICTURES are from an early Morph OS version.

" The Multiplayer Tactic Shooter for MacOS! "
Hmmm...So is it MACOS or MorphOS or maybe both? And where did it say that it is being developed on MorphOS and not MACOS? Where MACOS seems smarter with better devtools available......
And what about alien nations then? There's already a MAC demo available, so where's the MorphOS demo?
Now remember that Hyperion guys were doing some MAC work. And then take a look at this.
"Shogo Patch for Mac_User with Radeon-Gfxboard can be downloaded HERE".
Now RageHard was running on a Radeon, so I guess there's more pointing in the direction of the MAC.

One of those indian guys (won't try to spell his name ;) was a beta-tester for
the game. The game is under GPL which means the only thing he can't do is
releasing it without the sources, but he could demand the sources from Hyperion.
These GPL-rules can't be "overwriten" by any contract/agreement between Hyperion
and their beta-testers.

Hi!
Actually two people who were doing this presentation were Quake 2 Betatesters.
They did not ask for permission to present Quake 2 at that opportunity, though.
They just did it without even mentioning it to me or anybody else first.
The Quake 2 presentation was not on the Pegasos, though, it was on an Amiga running under OS 3.x with WarpOS. I guess there was a reason for it why it
was not shown on the Pegasos :) My guess is that the reason for not showing it
on the Pegasos is the current lack of 3D API for them. Asides from that the
WarpOS Emulation of them is at best my knowledge quite decent. And I know I
did nothing to prevent it from running on purpose. Shogo appearently did not
run on their Emulation, but I think I know what the reason for this is (Heretic II did run on it). So the 3D-Hardware-issue is the reason I'd guess why they
showed it on an Amiga.
BTW: At some point in the *future* - not sure when - you can expect future PPC programs - 68k programs of course excluded - from me will go "OS 4 only".I cannot say if this will extent to my work for Hyperion Entertainment, this depends what Hyperion Entertainment decides. But I know I am not the only
one in the company favouring OS 4 only titles some time in the future (once the AmigaOne and OS 4 have a solid base - would be mad to do this earlier, of course :)). Coding OS 4 Native will definitely have advantages in the "speed department" and also to be able to use APIs like AmigaInput (instead of one API for each different Input Controller !!!)
But I definitely "vote" for Hyperion Entertainment PPC Native titles being OS 4 only from some point. I cannot say when this will be, this depends of course on
the sales of OS 4. But at one point it will happen. Will definitely be after
Quake 2, BTW, Quake 2 will be a OS 3.x + WarpOS title. It might even run on
MorphOS. I did not test it and I do not care about it. But if their WOS Emulation is as good as they claim it should work, normally. I won't test this,
though.
68k versions will definitely be excluded from this, but as to how far 68k versions will still remain to be seen. Well, I guess for some "low-specced" games (not 3D Shooters :) ) 68k versions might still make sense. Though Freespace sales are not actually encouraging for the "68k effect".

Hi!
Not GPL-discussion again. People can demand the source-code after a RELEASED
VERSION. The GPL itselves specifies this. No release up to now did happen.
Yes, there's some stuff in the GPL FAQ, but the GPL FAQ are not part of the GPL licence.
But I did not sue these guys or anything like this. I was just angry with them,
that they did not ask before. Hey, they might have even got an "okay" to show Quake 2 on that meeting, assuming they clearly indicate that this game is shown on AmigaOS, not MorphOS :) And maybe a remark that it will also run on the AmigaOne - then I would have had absolutely no problem with them showing it
on that meeting.
After all they were Betatesters, and I think trustable guys. I think the whole thing was a "do now - think later" matter. I hope people don't try to make something out of it for stupid discussions on the forum.

Also the url (http://www.titan-computer.com/ami/ragehard/screens.html) seems to refer to

Than again on the screenshots page it doesn't say if the shots are from the Mac or the

IIRC, it was The German AmigaPlus which reported those pictures first. I don't know why, but I guess that's the reason why it's in the amiga section.
But I wonder why there's no link to that page on the Titan website

Sales actually were lower than Heretic II. Though this could be partially credited to that many Amiga-users currently are in "waiting mode until something happens". Though this of course doesn't do the Amiga Platform any good... Definitely there
was no "68k effect" on sales, and even less a "Amithlon effect".
Still there might be 68k versions of future titles which also run on a real 68k. Such 68k versions might even work on some Emulator. But we'll decide this title-by-title, as to how much sense this makes for a specific title. It's doubtful we'll make 68k versions of future games which would not run fast enough on a real 68k.
But I guess we should move this discussion really elsewhere, as I am now going *really* off-topic, right now... sorry :)

It's hard to know how many of Amithlon 1 were sold, but there's only
about 600 people on the mailing list. H&P marketed it very badly, at
much too high a price.
Numbers like that won't create a market. Also, Amithlon users will not
expect a game to work - most games are AGA only. You will need to make
a noise about it if you do a game that has RTG.
Hopefully if Amithlon 2 gets released it will sell much better.

Among others a distribution requires a complete package including documentation.

Look everyone! Definitive word from Hyperion
Making copies of Hyperion games on CD and giving them to your friends is not illegal distribution. Selling them at a market stall is not illegal distribution. Everyone is entitled to sell and give away Hyperion games so long as you don't offer a "complete package including documentation"
To avoid a huge rush I suggest that those of us who wish to distribute Hyperion's games should charge $5.00 or local equivalent before tax. Remember not to include documentation or other packaging.

Also, once Amiga OS 4 is available, everyone interested in offering "non distribution" versions of the operating system should wait for an announcement on ANN. Unlike "official" AOS4 in a nice package, there will be no need to pay Hyperion's high costs. Users who just want a non-distribution copy can get one nice and cheap, either $5 on CD or $1 for access to an ISO via FTP.
# OK, joke ends. But Stephen, do you finally understand why Hyperion's position on this is a joke too? If you want the rights granted in the GPL then you must abide by the requirements of the license too.

I said if it does not include documentation it is not distribution. I did not say that IF you include documentation it would be a LEGAL distribution. Legality might be a different issue (for example an illegal copy in case of a commercial game, or by leaving out gpl.txt in case of a GPL'ed game).
Copying a CD illegally is merily an "illegal distribution."

why the h*ll bother with games anyway....its a waste of time, as most
(potential) users of both amigaone and pegasos were youngsters maybe
10/15 years ago and played games then....I can't imagine people
25 years and up buying old games ported to amigaone/pegasos, h*ell
Feeble Files came in 97 ?
If you really are a gamer you should (atleast in my view) have a pretty
decent pc system or a good console like PS2/Gamecube and get your kicks
from there, why bother buying 1+ year old games just because you *can* play
them on your amiga or buying them just to support the gamecompany making
them?..
Instead of porting those games that sell like 200 copies, consentrate on making
something useful/unique so its worth keeping to amiga...
I'm 26 years old, have 2 kids....wife and house....I will *never* buy a
(old/ported)game for my amiga (did buy Shogo, havent opened the case yet)
unless its an *good* orginal game (wouldn't mind roketz on RTG though)
My son have my PS1, so only games we buy is kids games for that one..
I *will* buy every app that will come around for amiga/amigaone that I can use,
and I have bought everything available thats useful for me..my latest purchases
are VHI studio (transfer family pics from my digicam) and Ibrowse(but use aweb :)
A good idea maybe for game porting companies would be to listen to the users
and make a poll or something on whats needed next, be it games/apps/drivers for
hardware ? instead of just decide to port that game, and 50% the process
announce it to the community..
Just my view/opinions, any1 disagree ? yes ? please reply then and tell me importance
of pc/mac ports of games, as I might be wrong...

I did not distribute any copies. I gave out Beta versions. This is a difference. If the GPL-people don't like this they better should make a new
version of the GPL which says this in other words. I am so sick of people wanting to "keep the spirit of the GPL". Contracts have no spirit. They have exact worded regulations. With all those GPL-fanatics making me angry I will give the GPL as much as it demands and not a single thing later, following the regulation to the word, but not a single word more.
And yes, Quake 2 Source Code will be available once the game is finished, but not a single second earlier.

In reply to Comment 31 (Anonymous):
You're an idiot.
The words "distribute" and "distribution" are context sensitive. Distribution is clearly defined differently in copy right law and in the GPL.
From what I understand of the GPL you do not need to release source if you do not intend to distribute the software. Beta testing doesn't count. For instance, one might choose to develope software, beta test it and then choose to not release it. It would be ridiculous to expect someone to release the source code at such a point. Remember, beta code is considered unfinished and highly unreliable. It's value to the community is rather questionable at this point.
Another example of this is if say a developer writes software for their own personal use. If the developer in question asks his friend to test it for him, would he need to release the source to the world? Of course not. One more example would be the case where a development team develops code using GPLed components, tests it and then decides they do not wish to use the GPL components anymore. Do they still need to release the source, assuming the software has never been distributed outside the development and test team? Of course not! The idea behind GPL is not to hurt developers but to help developers. Forcing developers to release every bit of code that touches a GPL license is silly and generally not very useful to the community.
So to summarize, distributing GPLed software exclusively to beta testers does not mean it's being distributed to the public at large and therefore no need to release source code. Get over it.
As for this game. <sarcasm>It looks OH so orignal!</sarcasm> *yawn*

Well, the same could be said about any Word Processor, Web Browser, Paint Prog, or any other app. They all exist elsewhere and many are alot better than anything on Amiga. I actually DO have a nice gaming PC (used alot), (and a PS1 which I haven't touched in over a year) But I would rather use one system for everything. There will come a time (if OS4+ A1 are sucessful) that Amiga will get new original titles again. Some possibly coming at the same time as PC versions. But at the same time, if it will get a few of the good PC games over I say go for it. The rest will come naturally. Don't assume that nobody wants these titles. Even on the PC I often pick up a "last years game" to find out it still is great fun to play!

Actually the average games player is no longer the spotty 12-year-old school kid, it's the 25-year-old professional male who has grown up with games and is still playing them - Exactly the type of person who's going to be buying the AmigaOne / Pegasos.
You could apply your argument that "theres no point making an Amiga version cos it's already been out on the PC for years" to pretty much every application / game / utility out there. And where would that leave us? With no software whatsoever.
So what if it's been out on PC for a couple of years - it hasn't been available on Amiga, and that's the whole point. 90% of people who remember the Amiga but haven't owned one for some years think its only capable of playing 2D (the Alien Breed, Superfrog, Rainbow islands) type games.
I've shown such people my PPC+Voodoo3-equipped A4k running the Shogo demo and they've been truly amazed and have steadfastly refused to believe its an Amiga. You can't undersemphasize how important games are to a system - it's games that show how powerful your machine is. Kids aren't impressed by Word Processors and Web browsers - they want to run around killing stuff and blowing shit up.

>from there, why bother buying 1+ year old games just because you *can* play

>them?..
Because that's the whole point.... Like I say you could apply that argument to anything - why bother writing a word processor or spreadsheet or web browser for the Amiga - after all, most of us already have PC's so we should just use Word / Excel / IE, right? The whole point of these new powerful Amigas is that we no longer have to use our PCs because our Amiga isnt up to the job - we can use our amigas for Everything, like we used to, and that includes playing games.
>Instead of porting those games that sell like 200 copies, consentrate on
>making something useful/unique so its worth keeping to amiga...
>I *will* buy every app that will come around for amiga/amigaone that I can >use, and I have bought everything available thats useful for me..my latest >purchases are VHI studio (transfer family pics from my digicam) and Ibrowse
>(but use aweb :)
I most recently bought Art Effect and DigiBoosterPro. I didnt buy Shogo because I tried the demo and it was too chuggy on my old BlizzardPPC@166Mhz but now I've got a A4000+CSPPC its nice and fast so I'll buy it.

Ermm.. sorry, that should've been "overemphasize", obviously :)

ok, i mostly agree....maybe its just me....i might have lost interrest in games, but
what you are saying are that most users of amiga1/pegasos are buying it to play games
on a computer wich they have special interrest in....maybe it is so...
So if you are buying amigaone/pegasos you are an oldtime amiga user and buying it
as a 'hobby' computer....the ones who left the platform years ago won't come back
as the pc's have 100x more apps as we have, and every one is better...
How can porting 1+ year old games change that...porting old apps would be
more helpful...

Whats good with the amiga is the OS and thats what need to be shown more, with
more apps....so i would say writing a word processor, web browser would
gain more hope getting more users to the computer that games would do..
People shifting from pc/windows coz they are tired of windows crashing, but
usally they have no choice but Mac, coz of its user friendlyness...
With the Amiga1/pegasos being able running linux at decent speed might help
as it has office apps, browsers and stuff....
Ofcource, games push the hardware to the max and shows the machines power...

For a change.. I'd like to congratulate the authors of Rage Hard if they are (still) reading this. It might not *look* like the best 3D titles that appeared for *windows* this year, but it certainly looks like it could be as fun as Counter Strike.
Keep up the good work!

As long as Realsoft 3D comes for WarpOS and runs on MOS I see no problem in your decision. :-7

What's your problem with this Q2 matter, Steffen?
I actually think it is quite nice some people see
something moving at a usermeeting - or do you think
you "own" Quake2 and want it to sell after all?

I hear the sales of PSX were mainly due the
20+ year olds?

"I had a very bad day and morons like you don't make it any better."
Calling people names doesn't help your cause.
"I did not distribute any copies. I gave out Beta versions. This is a difference."
There is no difference for the purpose of copyright law. Giving people copies of the Quake II engine or a derivative work is illegal unless you have permision. Where is permission granted for you to give people copies of the Q2 engine?
That's right, in the GNU GPL. And what does the GNU GPL say about giving people copies of ID Software's program? That's right, it says that you must include source code or a proper notice offering source code. NOTHING ELSE gives you the right to make copies of ID Software's program and give them to people.
So, as we established right at the start, you are in breach of contract.
