[News] Poll concerning APUS IDE/last_ipl problemANN.lu

The Linux APUS projectmanagers have set up a poll to get feedback from users which have a non booting or similar unstable Linux kernel. Many Linux APUS users have reported problems with the more recent Linux APUS kernels (2.4.14 and up) which affects many users. The symptoms of the problem are either non-bootable kernel and/or getting output messages such as:

last_ipl[2] already set to 2f, now 2d!

To help us find out where this problem originates we, the developers of APUS, are conducting a poll to examine system configurations. If you are an APUS user and/or have tried the newer kernels please spend some time by using the follwing form.

Non Linux users can also help us. Simply download the latest kernel (2.4.18) and the latest bootstrap program and then decompress them into the same directory. Download the test-ramdisk image and place that (still compressed) into the same directory. Go to that directory and run:

bootstrap --apus -k vmlinux -r ramdisk.image.gz root=/dev/ram

This will boot a non harddisk basic Linux APUS system. Please leave feedback. You can see the current results here.

It's not dead at all. You may have this impression because it has been some longer time now since the last kernel (2.4.18) has been released, but, you can't blame that on APUS, 2.4.18 is actually the latest stable kernel released by Marcello (see http://www.kernel.org ).

The UW-SCSI driver is currently being worked on (as a small sidenote: by the one who wrote the php and html stuff of this poll)

does it by any chance support blizzard visions? i tried it before and i think it pushed the display thru the aga and i gave up because the closest tv's downstairs. If so does anyone know if theres a working Xserver and overall how fast the whole thing runs ?
Might want to run it for a bit before os4 comes out to do something useful with the beast :) ... thats if i can stop it crashing lol

Huh, Do you mean the BVision? Well of course the X server runs on BVision equipped A1200, I guess the most widely used configuration outthere!!
Have you given the kernel the correct videomode on the bootstrap line? Maybe you also take a look in the FAQ.

I've done very little with my amiga in ages because of its stability problems and i've only had it going again for a couple months.
I'll have a go at Apus later on , i'll have to find a PPC distro to install :)

Well, the newly released Debian/GNU Linux 3.0 a.k.a. Woody is you friend! Rock stable, running flawlessly here, cool apps! And now after the official release, you can also download the iso images! Don't take LinuxPPC, there's no advancing development on it!

BVision has been supported for years.
on your bootstrap line, add the following tot he end of the line
video=pm2fb:mode:1024x768-60
this gives you a decent console display.
for using BVision with X, it uses the PermediaII driver....so make sure you
have XFree86 4.x and you'll have no problems. (example configs are
on the Linux-apus site..

For PPC Distro i really do suggest Debian. most of us use it (so you get better
support) , its very easy to keep it up to date, and it has best packages.
oh! and you can 'play the knife-edge' yourself...ie configure it so that
