Fighting Microsoft Media Realnetworks has introduced a new multimedia- platform called HELIX. Helix consists of a encoder, client and server and is able to playback 55 currently known media types, including RealMedia, Microsoft Media, Quicktime, MPEG2 and 4 and several others. The source shall become available to the public within the next 90 days. Realnetworks wants to achieve presence on all of the platforms in use today. For the Amiga this could mean an incredible win ! I doubt, 68k will be quick enough to do decent decoding of modern streaming formats, but for PPC and Amithlon users things should be great ! It seems the opensource offer is restricted to the client (aka player) only. Some of the companies which signalled support for Helix are: Cisco, Hitachi, HP, Intel, Lindows, NEC, Nokia, Opera, Oracle, PalmSource, Pinnacle, Red Hat , Sony, ST Microelectronics, Sun, Symbian, Texas Instruments and TiVO.

From what I garnered from my friends paying more attention on IRC (for some reason, my Linux Realplayer on FreeBSD refused to play their stream, and RP7-on-Windows with every plugin in the book still demanded I install RealOne to view... no thanks), this is basically an open-sourcing of The Software that Makes JWZ Cry: http://www.dnalounge.com/backstage/log/2001/09.html
Further, if I get this right, the codecs are still proprietary, or at least, Real's will be. More amusing about the product in general is that, apparently, a big deal was made about 'cleanly' reverse-engineering Windows Media, when Real is supposed to have slapped a DMCA suit on a company doing the same to them.
That's all best-guess; I can't bring myself to care too much myself, even as this is no doubt an essential product for webcasters (just as the fully proprietary Real/WMP/Quicktime servers were before it, so has much changed?) ... It smells like a "Let's pray the community can fix our bugs!" effort to me, but if anyone monkeys on it and increases the adoption of Ogg formats, maybe it will end up serving a higher cause...

I have found Quicktime/Darwin Video streaming server to be pretty good. Darwin is open source also.

That's how it look right now, but things can happen over the next 90 days. I guess there will be some lobbying from the OSS-community to make Real open it all.
But as it stands, AmigaOS probably wont gain much from this. Doubt Real is interested in compiling their codecs for OS4.

Same was said about Netscape, and as it turns out, most of the work on Mozilla was done inhouse. What this is about is Real not wanting ending up like Netscape, that is being strangled by M$. Going the OSS-way is their only option to further the adaption of their formats.

If LinuxPPC get the codecs there is a chance that we can use it for OS4 or pegasos. Don't we already have an Amiga player using xanim codecs for playing indeo stuff ?

CyberAVI uses the xanim 680x0 codecs to play Indeo.
They were originally compiled for 680x0 Sun systems.

Absolutely! I read the Ogg Vorbis post below, and there is already a MorphOS version of that one which can be run on the Pegasos. So I wouldn´t be surprised if we get this Helix thing also, shortly after it's released.

I wish Real Networks would go out of business. Their software sucks, their nickel-and-dime-everybody strategy sucks, their codec sucks, their stand-alone player sucks, their in-your-face registration forms suck, but most of all content providers who require Real software suck!
If it were not for corporate sponsors Real would already be dead. I hope MPEG4 kills this company, and quickly!

REAL is the WORST spam there is. It should die a quick death and everyone should move on. Any company that advertises a free media player and offers 20 links to the pay version with a subtle layered link into the actual free download is, in my opinion, hurting.

Can you play Windows Media 7 and 8 on Amiga?

They did not get a license from Microsoft recently, other than their old license which is not clear if it allows them to build such a product.
Looks like we will watch another legal battle.
Real is also seeking open source help.

Too bad the Realmedia codecs are PPC only (68k versions would be interesting for emulator users). But the best thing on the site is hidden on the bottom of the "features" list:
"Codecs that will most likely _NEVER_ be supported
· WMA (0x161)
· QDesignMusic (QDM2)
· Sorenson Video 3 (SVQ3)
Do not ask about those codecs. If you try, you will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."
Seems the programmer has had a real hard time with those ... ;-)

I don't think Real deserves any praise.
The only positive outcome of making the player Open Source is it allows people to check for trojans and the likes.
On the other hand, the Open Source community will be fixing Real's bugs for free.
It should be obvious that Real's only goal is to further their own corporate agenda, as demonstrated by an encoder that remains closed source and a costly license required to provide RealA/V support on web servers.
IMHO, proprietary formats don't belong on the web, for this matter, without open standards there wouldn't be a web at all.
The MPEG formats are more than appropriate for A/V content, and any improvement or new format should be GPL/OS/Royalty free/etc or killed in the egg by webmasters.

Ogg Vorbis runs on MorphOS, therefore it also runs on the Pegasos. I know that there also is a 060 version, but that was not relevant in this case!
