Amithlon updates : Comment 1 of 6 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Budda on 07-Aug-2002 10:11 GMT | The readme included in the archive mentions a number of small core patches. But one of the more exciting things is the improvement to the gfx drivers -
"Advantages of using the replacement are more hardware accelleration, multi-head and multi-card support for Matrox cards, and switching of resolution and depth(!) on most cards supported only through the VESA driver."
A new serial driver is also supplied; "Advantages of using the replacement should be a marked drop in lost characters (and thus a marked increase in transfer rates)" |

Amithlon updates : Comment 3 of 6 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Bill Hoggett on 07-Aug-2002 11:56 GMT | In reply to Comment 2 (Fabian): Generally speaking, yes. The amithlon_contrib updates are not incremental, in that each archive does not contain all the previous patches. Some of the patches in this latest archive may well obsolete some of the older patches, but the details about that are in the readme files.
In fact, the best advice is to read the "readme" files. Some of the new updates require the latest kernel to be installed.
I believe this latest update prepares the ground for the first Amithlon specific software port to run under AmigaOS. Though not yet finished, this was recently demonstrated at the last MAUG meeting and should prove interesting to Amithlon users everywhere. |

Amithlon updates : Comment 4 of 6 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Bill Hoggett on 07-Aug-2002 12:06 GMT | In reply to Comment 3 (Bill Hoggett): Sorry, re-reading my own post I see I was unclear in what I tried to say.
The archives are made up of a series of patches etc. Each individual patch does NOT require that an older version be installed first. Where a new patch or driver requires anything except the original Amithlon CD, it should be specified in the docs.
However, each archive only contains new or updated patches, drivers or utilities. In order to have a fully up-to-date system, you should download all the available update archives, and install the stuff relevant to your individual needs. |

Amithlon updates : Comment 5 of 6 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Bernd Meyer on 07-Aug-2002 13:53 GMT | In reply to Comment 2 (Fabian): And to hopefully make it even clearer: If you start with a blank hard drive and an AmigaOS XL CD, you will need to install all of the following to get to a fully up-to-date system:
* The AmigaOS XL Update1 from Haage&Partner
* The updated kernel available from www.amithlon.net
* Each of the first, second and third contrib packages from www.amithlon.net
I have the whole procedure down to about 5 minutes, but then again, I have done it LOTS of times (gotta test this stuff before I release it, including the installation instructions :) |
