Darius Brewka released v.063 of AmiStart. AmiStart is a Windows-like startmenu and quick-launch bar with drag&drop support and a very customizable GUI which allows transparency, rounded edges, background-patterns and much more. In this new version, AmiStart now also provides so-called Shape-Layer, which are customizable and programmable Skins for controlling external applications via Arexx. (For examples there's a cool looking skin for Songplayer available already). Read more about the new AmiStart website powered by GFX-BASE. We have created a website for AmiStart, which is now hosted at GFX-BASE, where you can now download exclusively the new version of AmiStart and a new Songplayer Skin, have a look at some screenshots annd check out the new features. You will find the link to the AmiStart website at the navigation on the left ('hosted sites').

I must admit, wheni first saw this i though, why does everyone want to imitate windows features. The start bar is prolly a good feature but, im tired of it. Plus the earlier versions of this program wernt the best.
It looks as though, this program is giving itself its own identity now, adding features that windows doesnt have, and its really standing out. When i get UAE up and running again, ill be putting this on!!

this app looks good though. Infact better than winxp one or even amidock on os4. Altough it's hard to say cause amidock seems to be also very configurable.

...its not the 'lookalike' its the 'method copy' i dont
agree with. the start bar/button is one of the worst
UI's thats available for computers.
AmigaOS has a menu system where you can have things
active and ready already - using things
like toolsdaemon etc. but, better than that,
we've got docks of all sizes and flavours.
why copy one of the worst features of windows?? whatever
floats your boat....

@ alan
Have you tried AmiStart? It does not seems so. Otherwise you would know that Amistart provides a launchbar, which does exactly this. I can't stand that "Oh, remindes of Windows in any way? Then it must be crap". Even Windows got some nice features, we can learn from that. We can also learn from MacOSX, Linux and BeOS. I personally very rarely use the Startbutton in AmiStart. Did you have look at the latest AmiStart screenshot on the AmiStart website? Probably not - have a look, then you can judge.

ummm, wrong end of stick mate. i said the start bar was one of
the worst features of windows. i didnt praise the good parts
of windows because this is an Amiga page and Windows advocacy
has its own place
>got some nice features, we can learn from that. We can also learn from >MacOSX, Linux and BeOS.
of course we can!! but PLEASE let us only 'clone' the good parts!!
>I personally very rarely use the Startbutton in AmiStart. Did you have look >at the latest AmiStart screenshot on the AmiStart website? Probably not - >have a look, then you can judge.
of course i looked at the new screenshots....had to see the new alpha
stuff :-) I've used an older version of amistart. Personally my system
is decked out with programs i need to run either in tools menu or
on the workbench (like a DIY person...all tools out on the bench!)
and i use magicmenu - so dont need to go to top of screen to
launch the menus

AmiStart has an API programmers can use. This opens completly new worlds.
Also it is dynamically alterable by ARexx.
Very Amiga-like if you ask me.
Oh, and the "Shapes" is a cool feature too.
Yes, it was a fart. I still can smell it.

Im kinda new to the Amiga (sold my amiga 4-5 years ago) and only recently i have started using WinUAE...
I dont think im doing anything wrong, but there could be dependencies that are satisfied, because AmiStart crashes under WinUAE 0.8.22 R1 and OS3.1..
Anyone got this to work?
Also, this version of WinUAE seems a lot slower then my previous configuration (WinUAE 0.8.17 R3). Anyway experience this?

In reply to Comment 10 (Rodney McDonell):
Hmm, i use it also on WinUAE0.8.22.1 without any problem, so if you have let your system as it was all should work right. Have you setup the Processor settings again? (>=68020). Does AS crash immediantly after launching it or do you do some actions before?
The Speed issue, have you forced the DIRECT mode in the CPU settings?, indirect or "after Picasso" is much slower AFAIK.
regards
