MorphOS Developer Connection hits 400 Registered Developers!
Developers range from over 50 countries. MDC hit 400 today. Congratulations to all of you. The Connection has been a progressively useful tool to all those involved because you contribute and work together to advance the operating system and the platform. Also, special congratulations to the Core MorphOS Development Team and especially to Ralph Schmidt. :-D We salute you!

Thanks also to Felix Schwarz who created the site and moderates it. Felix is working on MDC2 which will be based on Callisto and is coming!

MorphOS is destined to be at a computer near you soon!

Great work!

I am not a developer but I am registred to the MDC (and got AmigaDE).
Knowing how complicated it was to get a dev setup with GCC before the developer package I greatly appreciate the effort as the install and setup are very easy.
I could get some linux sources and recompiled some open source applications.

So what? A visit to MorphOS Developer Connection and Morphed might get him or her interested and started with development. At least you can download developer tools. The same can not be said on AOS4, can it? What is included with AOS4 - Notepad? Using free downloads to get the attention is a Good Idea TM and users probably appreciate the support for software development: Price-reduced boards, a dedicated web site and free software. No reason to get all-sarcastic.

Hi,

as everybody knows who has ever dealt with startup companies, that's
exactly what venture capitalists want to hear: Registered developers.
That was the deal with TAO at Snoqualmie already, beta testing for
registered developers, and then apply the calculus

if developers > max_developers then max_developers = developers

whenever the apply-button has been hit, or what do you think what
was the game Amiga Inc. has once played...

We will see in the next months if these 400 are really productive.

I guess the 3000 figure was from the Amiga SDK users registering on the amiga dev site. To get the real DE stuff (the parts done by AmigaInc) you had to get an NDA/SDA. This definitly restricted the number of DE project.

Hi Christophe,

I have never seen Amiga officials pointing out that difference. It's
all about public perception, and I suspect that the forums are being
instrumentalized again for what's commonly used as an indicator for
the significance of a startup company and its ability to draw circles
among developers. I've always appreciated the work at the forums.

After spending a fortune on Amiga stuff (A1, several DE packs) you just going to supply me one thing after another for free. That's evil. ;-)

I doubt it. AmigaDE was always a stupid idea given the market state. Why not use the efforts to port Sun's Java Virtual Machine to MOS instead? That is what's needed.. not some proprietary platform that nobody uses.

Correction: AmigaDE has a _version_ of Java.

While good enough for PDA use, in desktop terms it might as well not be there. It is certainly no substitute for a MOS port of J2SE. This is a very important distinction that always gets glossed over in the "DE has Java" statements.

I think AmigaDE needs to be rethought. As it is 32-Bit, and runs mostly across small devices that would sit as satellite objects in the periphery of the greater platform for Amiga--the general desktop/server--AmigaDE could well be retooled to run an Open Amiga Classic OS :) And it could have additional benefits when sitting inside the new Amiga OS (5.0; possibly 4.x). There would need to be a hardware abstraction layer in place to provide (from the lib OS) what the Classic Amiga software programs would look for--because the AmigaDE wouldn't be running on the classic machines, and would indeed be running across varied architectures.

(new 64-Bit proprietary Amiga OS (containing 32-bit AmigaDE/Classic))
(32-bit AmigaDE/Classic, open source and also separate from new Amiga OS)

Umm, no. DE does not have Java. All you guys in the Genesi camp seem to forget that the Java stuff in DE is actually part of the stuff that Tao provides with intent. The lawsuit is silly since you can't force Amiga to "port" DE over to MorphOS, since running there depends upon Tao porting their intent layers over to MorphOS.

I doubt that Genesi cares anything at all about running the DE on their equipment. IMO all that matters to them is the Amiga branding, and wasting AIncs resources. For the market MorphOS is currently targetted at, a jvm is a wasted effort.

You have a particularly skewed view of the world. The issue is a contract. If Amiga Inc signed a contract and failed to honour it then they must face the consequences. The trial will determine _if_ they failed to honour that contract. The wasting of resources in Amiga Inc's responsibility. If they had a watertight position and wanted to save resources the solution would have been simple: get the trial over with as fast as possible. Instead they have delayed it at every opportunity.

Genesi's motivation for going to court is irrelevant. All that matters is whether there was a contract breach or not. Hard luck stories don't matter either. If a company is so down on its luck as to fail to honour its obligations for as long as Amiga Inc have, it has no business being in existence any more.

There goes Buckeyboy and his cohorts again. I can't wait to see the outcome of this trial when Amiga shows the judge all the evidence of Genesi's improper practices with respect to this case and skewing the contract they signed. Assuming that the judge is a pushover and putting their eggs in the basket before they've won the case isn't something I would look favorable on, if I were the judge. I can just imagine what a judge will think of these dirty little games they play and taking the judge for a ride on the PegPong Rollercoaster.

Summary judgement? If Amiga allows a summary judgement to happen (which Genesi is banking on, assuming that Amiga can no longer fight) then Amiga are insane. They've got this case in the bag once it goes to trial with all the crap Genesi and Buck have pulled. Amiga, pull all your punches, you've won if your lawyer or lawyers have the right arguments and background information. Prepare them well!

No, not skewed. Just skeptical of what good this lawsuit will bring. Yeah, Genesi (bPlan?) had a contract for AmigaDE on the Pegasos back when the Pegasos was an AmigaOne and back when the AmigaDE was supposed to be a standalone Digital Environment. Something happened where bPlan couldn't agree to the conditions that the Pegasos had to meet to be an AmigaOne (ROM dongle and license fees), so it's not an AmigaOne.

A few years later, the AmigaDE still isn't what it was promised to be, and the Pegasos still isn't an AmigaOne. Yeah, Amiga didn't fulfill their side of the contract for having AmigaDE running on Pegasos, but bPlan/Genesi didn't fullfill their side of the contract regarding license fees and the ROM dongle.

The original contract was to have the AmigaDE environment running on bPlan made AmigaOne spec hardware, not on MorphOS, at least that's what my assumptions are based on the original goals for the Amiverse.

YES, AmigaInc failed to deliver AmigaDE on the Pegasos.
BUT BPlan failed to deliver a zico spec machine and they couldn't agree with AmigaInc on licensing.

I haven't seen the contracts, only going by what I've seen on the net over the past few years. I have a feeling that there are a few outs that any decent lawyer for Amiga could find wrt bPlan/Genesi not holding up their side of the deal. Amiga don't have access to any decent lawyers and have a small problem with making court dates and honestly in court, at least according to guys like Rich.

So when these lawsuits eventually come to a close, and Amiga is forced into folding, hopefully those hardworking folks at Hyperion and Eyetech don't get screwed.

They have failed to deliver AmigaDE full stop. The question is whether they breached any contracts.

> BUT BPlan failed to deliver a zico spec machine

Zico? WTF does the obsolete zico spec have to do with anything? Or bPlan for that matter?

FYI, the zico spec was aimed at machines that would run the mythical AmigaDE based new generation AmigaOS, before Amiga realised that the core on which AmigaDE would be based is not fit for desktop operating systems.

The zico spec is now meaningless, and the AmigaOne certainly does not even come close to complying - nor would you want it to, as the Zico specs are now suboptimal.

> and they couldn't agree with AmigaInc on licensing.

Huh? You're talking about AmigaOS now. We were discussing AmigaDE and contractual obligations, which have nothing at all to do with AmigaOS licensing.

Amiga Inc signed a contract which means that the conditions were agreed by both sides. The question is: have Amiga Inc breached that contract or not? If they have, they must face the consequences, irrespective of any other peripheral issues between them and Genesi.

Someone who write this in response to what has been said has clearly an agenda and against hyperion or is just plain dumb, which could also be the case.. It's known that AmigaDE which Bill Hoggett was parodiating, was said to have 3000 developers, and yes of course each one of them would have to have a sdk of AmigaDE, an actual product not vapour as she claims... then she start mixing what been said with AmigaOS, as if it had something to do with what was been said before... besides how something that is alpha and is seen is vapour?
I'm yet to see a red troll twisting so much what someone else had said so it can comply to her agenda!
