AONE Gothenburg 2002 Fall Event : Comment 41 of 53 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Kronos on 04-Aug-2002 03:31 GMT | In reply to Comment 39 (Phill): Yes you can combune GPL and non-GPL code if the non-GPL code is part of the
OS (which rules out an UAE-Petunia for Linux), but you would still have the
problem of geting Petunia to work in a way that is compatible with the way
UAE uses it's JIT.
About relicencing UAE: Thats what Bernie did for the parts he used in Amithlon
(very few) and even here he had to rewrite some stuff himself because he could
not get a licence.
Trying to get ALL authours of UAE to say yes (which would be neccesary) is just
as easy as drinking an ocean dry ;0)
You should also remember that this would be against the very principle of free
SW, that nobody should be able to use it in closed-SW for their on advantage.
And yes a JITed UAE would mean a slight advantage for OS4 over MorphOS.
This leaves these options:
1. Rewrite Bernies JIT to PPC (should be possible with a "bit" of work).
2. Rewrite UAE to access a "petunia.library" under OS4 (even more work).
3. Release a GPL-version of Petunia and add it to UAE (still a lot of work).
4. Live with UAE-PPC non-JIT. (how much AA-dependant SW do you really need ?). |
