RC5-72 contest, AOS4 could catch MOS : Comment 101 of 110 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Anonymous on 14-Sep-2004 12:26 GMT | In reply to Comment 99 (Anonymous): No there is no Altivec support in the MOS kernel. There is Altivec enabled RC%-72 client for the MOS, but as I said there is OS4 version too.
Who cares which OS had Altivec enabled client first when there is one for both platforms ?
Is it so that when you can't say anymore that "there is no X for the OS4" then you start now whine that "So what MOS had it Y days ago" ? :P |

Public one, just like OS4. MorphOS website even has links to AltiVec programming. Why wouldn't it have support in kernel ? |

How? There is no client for PC that reports MorphOS as platform. I
think you're mixing up teams, which can be freely chosen, with
platform, which should simply tell what platform is used. Of course,
there are people running the client on their PPC Amigas, with MorphOS.
> OS4 *IS* PPC AmigaOS, so why should it be changed?
Why don't you just read the previous 95 comments instead of asking the
same questions? But ok: If you think that OS4 "is" AmigaOS, then
that's your opinion. No problem with that. But in that case, you have
to remove the keys contributed by systems running PowerUP, as that's
not the same platform (different kernels, neither PPC hardware or
software has "Amiga" label, etc).
And in any case, even if you think that OS4 "is" PowerPC/Amiga OS,
then I still don't understand why you want to make it impossible to
get statistics for how many keys are contributed by machines running
OS4.
As for comparing secret versions with public ones, I don't think the
unfairness lies mainly in the timing advantage the unreleased system
gets. Rather, the problem is that when people get access to secret
insider versions, they very commonly get carried away. There's
also a tendency to overlook problems as they "will surely be fixed
before release, so they can be ignored". Therefore I'm not interested
at all in the judgement of some insider - the only info that can be
interesting is a list of upcoming features, or so. Will the new
version have disk DMA, JIT, etc? That could be interesting.. a
judgement which cannot be verified is not.
Oh, and about altivec: Someone claimed this as an advantage for OS4,
when in fact MorphOS has had it for a longer time. Of course OS4 still
has the chance to get it to a *release* version before MOS, but as
it's said, "don't count your chickens before they are hatched". :-) |

Posted by pixie on 14-Sep-2004 15:17 GMT | In reply to Comment 103 (Johan Rönnblom): PowerUP run on AmigaOS hence being called Amiga OS/ PowerPC, running on another platform doesn't change it a bit. |

PowerUP doesn't run (yet?) on OS4...presumably it will one day.
@All
This whole thread gone way downhill...go on, add another platform to dnetc...further drive home the 'split'...sheez, what a waste of time. Healthy competetion is one thing, but I don't think 'healthy' applies the petty bickering in threads like these
Does anyone truly care if OS4 needs a historical leg up to get close to MorphOS stats? Did I say cheating? ;-)
