Coldfire prototype, pics : Comment 58 of 67 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Samface on 29-Jun-2003 12:06 GMT | In reply to Comment 48 (Anonymous): "Amiga Spirit" != Custom Hardware Design
The fact that our OS as well as most applications was tied to that old and outdated hardware design is probably what killed the Amiga in the first place. Our custom hardware restricted platform kept us from beeing able to keep up with the competition which was able to double it's performance every six months without breaking compatibility. We were simply way too dependant of Motorola's discontinued processor family and our precious chipsets in order to renew our hardware at all. Sure, Phase5 managed to help us keep up the pace for a little while, but there's only so much you can do with hardware addons.
Please, let's not repeat the mistakes of the past. If you think of "Amiga" as a computer with a custom hardware design then think again. Hardware is a commodity and I think we all can agree on that the Amiga spirit is about so much more than just a commodity. That's why "Amiga" does not equal hardware or any type of hardware design. |
