Amiga-News.de interviewing Ben Hermans : Comment 62 of 86 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Alex Klauke on 20-Feb-2003 21:15 GMT | In reply to Comment 59 (Don Cox): -- "I was never comfortable with the previous ideas of an OS on an OS. i.e. AOS on linux or Qnix, I'm,
-- glad that was abandoned. "
-- That was the Gateway approach - dump AmigaOS because updating it would
-- be too difficult, use BeOS or QNX or Linux or Intent instead and tell
-- everyone it's really AmigaOS reborn.
intent was not Gateway. QNX was on Schindlers' list.. JC called the new thing AmigaOE, not OS.
AmigaInc. 2k was upfront and honest about what they wanted to do, the very first announcements were
the Tao partnership (Jan 6 2000) and "we are a software only company" that is going to build the
AmiVerse/Amie, now AmigaDE. Not to dump AmigaOS in first place but to try sth. new amiga-like.
And I liked JC's OE which was followed by the quite similar AmiVerse idea. Not only because I like
the vision of interoperability between devices but because the platform needed a new innovation to
grow again. It is my belief that we cannot compete even at the Apple level with a desktop AmigaOS
only. (Apple at least has its OS, its hardware, its i-software and its devices iPod, AirPort..)
With AmigaDE and even AmigaOS itself spreading into the mobile, PDA, STB, kiosk and whatever else
spaces, the platform at least has a chance to last a little longer. It did not come as a surprise to me that
Genesi is heading in quite an equal direction.
-- Now thanks to the Hyperion team, we find that updating is difficult
-- but not impossible, and could have been done years ago. Better late
-- than never.
Yes thanks to Hyperion, but w/o AmigaInc. looking for an alternative after realizing they could not
bring the DE to the desktop in short time there would be no continuation of AmigaOS developement
now at all. Even if they only 'realized' it through the advices of Ben and Alan, but they set the starting
point for OS4 as it happens now. No need to discuss this further.
But for now I'm in urgent need for a new Amiga after 3 yrs. when the 4000 went south. The ordered
AmigaOne is hopefully being shipped from Taiwan next Monday. OS4 a few weeks later (few = less than
10 weeks in my book). After that I can patiently wait what comes next ;-) If only I get rid of 'working'
in front of this ancient P 133 soon.. (even the >/< key is not functioning today :-/ )
Ciao, Alex |
