[Forum] Any interest in Zorro cards? | ANN.lu |

I am currently toying with the idea of designing a Zorro card for the Amiga. What would the interest be in a card with the following:
10/100 mbit Ethernet, 2 X High speed serial ports, 1 X ECP/EPP parallel port & IrDa?
There is some preliminary information on my website
I am also looking at the possibility of adding a Zorro to ISA bridge and making the card work in Zorro 2 and Zorro 3 Amigas.
Are there any other features you would like?
If you are interested, please email me. If there is enough interest I will look at making some prototypes and if feasible, a short production run.

Any interest in Zorro cards? : Comment 131 of 147 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Humplik on 19-Dec-2001 04:22 GMT | In reply to Comment 125 (Mike Veroukis): -really not geared for that. HOWEVER, Linux pretty much owns the internet
-server market. Microsoft lags behind linux there, which proves MS is not
Microsoft has been making increased gains in the server market ever since they actually took notice of the Internet server market and began wooing companies over to them. Linux, Unix, et al have been out for how long? Microsoft only took an interest in the internet server market maybe..... 5 years ago, and they already has a 25% foothold in the internet server market. You don't see anything to worry about, when it's competing against a product THAT'S GIVEN AWAY FOR FREE??????? Remember boys and girls, when comparing Amiga to Linux, LINUX IS FREE!!!!!! Until the AmigaOS is FREE it can't be compared!!!
-invincible, you just gotta be smart about it. One more thing, Linix is also
-available on PPC, however, the most prefered and common hardware base is x86.
-This just shows that when people are allowed a choice most would pick x86 over
What choice? When's the last time you were able to just march into a store and pick up a PPC based machine? Probably the last time you set foot in an Apple dealer I'd reckon. What kind of choice is that? If you want to be accurate, you should have worded it, "Linux is available for the PPC, but most Linux users don't use it because they can't find PPC hardware to run it on, although many have expressed an interest in it."
-PPC. You can sit and argue how PPC is far better until your blue in the face,
-people will still buy x86. Sorry.
You know, all of you loonies have been saying the same thing, backed up with assumptions based on the almighty "if." You keep thinking whatever plans Amiga Inc. has will be to become a (if not THE) mainstread operating system to replace Windows, and if not them, then Linux will. Who said Amiga users want to be mainstream in the first place? I don't give a shit if the Amiga is run by only 5-10% of computer users, as long as it's out there. The Amiga never had more than 5% of the market share to begin with.
-Windows is controlled by Microsoft. The hardware however is pretty open to
-everyone. It is true that the hardware makers cater to MS, but it doesn't stop
-you from using it for things other then Windows.
Pretty open how? Do you think any OEM will risk losing their Windows OEM licence agreement by daring to ship a PC with a non-Microsoft operating system? Be tried that and managed to get THREE vendors to agree to ship BeOS based PC's. All three of them reneged, with the exception of Hitachi, who included it in a hidden partition on the hard drive that users couldn't access or boot off without phoning customer support for assistance, and it was not documented anywhere with the computer itself. And you know what? Microsoft STILL punished Hitachi, and hence we don't see (m)any Hitachi based Wintel machines anymore. I'm sure Amiga will have better success than that, aren't you? And hey, if Amiga just tries to compete by selling a competing OS to Microsoft, let's all remember how far that got IBM with OS/2. |
