Heavens no! That's necessary - for licensees. A license would be worthless otherwise.
However, I am against *compulsory* "quality assurance" by not letting the consumer choose his own hardware.
> Or is it the fee that is the problem?
You mean the fee licencees pay for their license? Of course not. TANSTAAFL.

Now we're getting to the core of the poodle (or however this Faustian reference is translated to English). There aren't that many alternatives today, but if hardware manufacturers have to bundle an OS and apply for certifications and provide "complete software + hardware solutions", chances are they won't bother doing products aimed at common consumers (as opposed to the server and developer markets) and Amiga users at all. In that case we'd be depending on a very select few providers like Eyetech, Elbox et al., and the consumer PPC market will stay as unattractive as it is today. Well, chances are that it will stay that way no matter what, but it's stupid to cut the branch you're sitting on.

Thanks for pointing that out, even though it wasn't necessary in this case. Lots of flamewars could be avoided if only more people expressed themselves that way. And I'm flattered someone's interested in my opinions... ;) |
