Amiga Inc. April executive update : Comment 93 of 186 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Ben Hermans/Hyperion on 13-Apr-2002 19:41 GMT | In reply to Comment 88 (anon): That's nonsense.
If Amiga were to go bankrupt, Hyperion can continue with development of the AmigaOS indefinitely and without limitation.
@Seehund: I get your point about costs rising and they would in this scenario.
One should however take into account that the POP specifications were released by IBM several years ago and that to the best of my knowledge until now there never were any desk-top oriented PPC based motherboards built by anybody.
After the demise of the Apple clone-makers, only Apple was building desktop PPC systems.
Fact of the matter is that if you combine the marketshare of x86 based solutions (primarily Windows) and Apple, you end up at nearly 100% of the desktop market.
There simply isn't any incentive for any company out there to roll out these PPC based alternatives.
Linux x86 being more versatile (partly due to the fact that it can execute Windows code by various means) Linux flavors for different architectures simply won't take off.
If you add the notorious "free beer" attitude of most Linux users, I find it extremely hard to imagine that this type of user would go for a desktop other than x86 which will always come at a price premium.
Bottom-line: I have great doubts about alternative PPC hardware surfacing without an Amiga company being involved. |
