According to Irmen de Jong, the AmigaPython website maintainer, the Python programming language may be included as standard with AmigaOS 4.0.
From the AmigaPython site:
UPDATE november 2002: from very reliable sources I know that AmigaPython might become part of the new Amiga OS 4.0 ! What AREXX was for AmigaDOS 2.x and 3.x, AmigaPython might be for the next generation of Amiga OS (and much more powerful of course)
Further information about Python is available at the Python Home Page.

Well... as far as I can tell the ARexx situation is rather complicated and
may involve more than one breach of contract and violation of the law. That
was what I gather had taken place in Commodore's times. What happened since
then I can only speculate about. ARexx development itself seems to have
ceased entirely around 1991; it had become part of the operating system
distribution a bit earlier around 1990 and you'll find tutorials and sample
code on the DevCon disks of that time. So there definitely was something
brewing. Whether Commodore eventually acquired the product or licensed it
is hard to tell. The subsequent changes of ownership of the Amiga operating
system made it even harder to figure out which contracts were closed, if
any. The net effect for ARexx seems to be that the original author lost
interest in the product and/or suing Commodore for breach of contract, if
there ever was a contract and/or the need/possibility to sue them. How this
affected the status of ARexx as part of the operating system is just as
hard to tell. Nobody seems to have wanted to open that can of worms. There
is certainly a real risk here. |
