Try only to realise the truth : Comment 317 of 335 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Neko on 07-Jul-2004 20:58 GMT | In reply to Comment 64 (Fabio Alemagna): I can quote a situation where you'd get crappy performance.
Until a little while back I was plugging all my machines into the back of my
ADSL router. Despite being specced as "100Mbit" (and the rest of the network
syncing to 100Mbit, Full Duplex) the actual throughput on it's tiny tiny host
processor failed to reach 7Mbit. Of course the actual ADSL specification it
implements would barely bit 8Mbits in one direction, and that even shared
between upwards of 20 people at the ISP.. so it doesn't matter so much.
Bridged through a FreeBSD server (Via C3 "Samuel", 800MHz, two 3C905B's), the
network performs excellently and at full speed.
So.. first look at shitty network hardware, I doubt most AmigaOne users really
have a properly wired corporate-style network, high performance switches in
racks etc. sitting around to test with. The same goes with Gigabit Ethernet on
the Pegasos - I'll be damned if I know it works beyond 100MBit because I have
nothing to test it with. I trust Nicolas' work and Gerald's assurances
though :)
