Warp3D software render driver : Comment 103 of 158 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Bernd Meyer on 21-Feb-2002 13:21 GMT | In reply to Comment 99 (Ben Hermans/Hyperion): Ben,
I have every sympathy for you guys working long hours, and being snowed under, believe me. I would never dream of expecting any work be done on your part to support Amithlon, much less demand it or pester you about it. Yes, I know that a certain shall-remain-nameless entity does not exactky share that attitude, and believe me, I am *not* happy about that at all. I consider respect for the basic right of self-determination in one's work one of the fundamental principles of enjoyable professional relationships.
That having been said, that does not appear to be the issue here. The work has been done, externally, already. All it would require from your side, as far as I can see, is a simple "Yes, Stephane, it's OK to release it".
I can understand you don't want to do that, for a number of reasons. I can understand that you hope to get someone to pay for a W3D license for Amithlon, and that you see a snowball's chance in hell to get anyone to pay such a license for the old PPC cards. It's good business sense.
The only thing I don't understand is why you can't just come straight out and say this, unambiguously, from the start. In other words, I don't understand why you got yourself into a situation where you end up scoulding Amithlon users and developers for allegedly wanting something for nothing, at exactly the time you have just given PPC users that exact same something for, indeed, nothing.
As for anyone suggesting to write unauthorized drivers for W3D.... Well, it sure isn't me doing that suggesting. If I had a lot of time, and was really really pissed off at you guys, I might attempt a reimplementation of the documented W3D API --- but as I don't have time, respect you, and also despise reimplementing software due to personality issues, that ain't gonna happen, either. |
