Warp3D software render driver : Comment 99 of 158 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Ben Hermans/Hyperion on 21-Feb-2002 12:35 GMT | In reply to Comment 95 (Bernd Meyer): @Bernie: Yes, it was me posting, sorry about the confusion.
Listen Bernie, I understand very well you want to further your product and as such I have no problems discussing these matters in a civilised way as you have been doing.
For the record, we did not "suppress" the software renderer for Amithlon. We asked the author not to release it for Amithlon because this would adversely affect our negotiation position with regards to licensing it.
The fact that it was released for PPC might seem inconsistent to you but then you should ask yourself: who's going to license Warp3D for PPC anyway given that OS 4 will support all PPC hardware out there already and any suitable that is to be released?
Yes, we are very busy with OS 4, Ami3D and Mac contract work.
No, we do not like the idea of OS 4 on x86 (as is being pushed by certain people who shall go nameless) but no, we do not have anything against Amithlon as such in much the same way as we do not have anything against AmigaXL, UAE or Amiga Forever. This has always been our position.
Do we think x86 is the future for the Amiga? No we don't but we have never made any secrets about that.
Nobody can claim we have not articulated our position on that very clearly.
Similarly nobody can claim that we should support this and that emulator for this and that architecture.
If I were to release an Amiga emulator for Alpha workstations, everybody would agree with me that I could not demand support for it from anybody.
I don't recall similar problems with Amiga Forever which has been around for ages. I suspect this might have more to do with certain members of the Amithlon development team than with the issues at hand.
We don't see any commercial merit in doing the work in the hopes that it will pay off, quite frankly we've been there and done that and given our already massive workload, we don't engage in any work anymore without clear commercial benefit which enables us to further support the platform.
We have been bugged in the past by the same person who shall go nameless to rework our PPC titles for 68K which would certainly be some work.
Every time we tried to secure some kind of minimum royalty to ensure break even, apparently the commercial prospects were not as rozy suddenly.
Bottom line is: we are open to any reasonable commercial proposals but I can't imagine that insult after insult will be conducive to getting anything done.
I fear very much that the atmosphere was severely polluted by recent events. |
