Warp3D software render driver : Comment 116 of 158 | ANN.lu |
Posted by darklite on 21-Feb-2002 19:41 GMT | In reply to Comment 114 (Alan Watson): >'Do we think x86 is the future for the Amiga? No we don't but we have never >made any secrets about that.'
But that is not the real reason he's opposing x86 so fiercely. He's trying to protect his business (even though they can't make profit on the Amiga market?), because he thinks an x86 AmigaOS will remove the need for ported games. He somehow thinks that all those who buy the Hyperion ports don't have a PC as well. If those customers bought the game for their PPC Amiga, they would've also bought it for their x86 AmigaOS... and others too. And why not try developing an original title and put stress on the gameplay? Personally, I'm sick of all the ultra-linear 1st person shooters on Windows myself. Afterall, you're not going to attract new users by porting PC games to a PPC Amiga either.
>Now whether you like it or not, that is his opinion. He is entitled to it,just
>as you are entitled to yours. In your eyes, the opposing of an x86 OS4 might >be 'idiotic',but think of it this way, your idea of an x86 OS4 can be viewed >as 'idiotic' as well.....
I agree. But it bothers me that Hyperion spread all the FUD about Amithlon, repeating silly arguments (BeOS, games on linux, ...) over and over again.
I can't think of any pro-x86 Amigan that opposes the idea of having a PPC AmigaOS, only that an x86 version is more important, because of the arguments given.
What *IF* PPC AmigaOS fails miserably (too little sales)? Isn't it safer not to place all your money into one bank? (I fail to think of the correct saying :)
>It's been stated before that Hyperion don't have a contract to do x86 OS4.So
>until Amiga Inc decides to offer this contract to any developers that might
>want to do it,the argument for Hyperion to do a port of OS4 to x86 is
>pointless.
Noone's saying Hyperion should do an x86 version. All we ask is that Amithlon is to be recognised as the 'official' (temporary) AmigaOS solution. For it to be official, the API's should be the same as those for the PPC AmigaOS. Work should be put into a cross-compiler. Martin Blom seems to be doing a great job so far with GCC, but it'd be nice to have an official, supported, and maybe even a polished (GUI) cross-compiler - of course based on Martin's work if that's possible.
AmigaOS will eventually run on x86, right? It wouldn't make sense to split the market now by ignoring Amithlon. The Amithlon userbase is growing as we speak.
Why not cooperate? Harald Frank has put alot of work into his powerpci API, in order to be able to make it support all PCI solutions out there, it would be a waste to only have it supported by Amithlon. Too bad Harald doesn't seem to be so easy to get along with :/ - and there's been far too many communication flaws (the Amithlon Warp3D license for example). Think of all the drivers OS4/MorphOS and Amithlon can share. Everybody can benefit. Of course, I do not know what terms Harald has placed on the powerpci library, but IMHO it has to be an open standard and is not to be controlled by one single party.
I don't think the Amiga market can survive more splits... so stop fighting and work together. |
