Posted by smithy on 20-May-2002 13:35 GMT | Conspiracy theory alert:
There have been a few of these long MOS vs OS4 threads over the
past week or two. But it doesn't really matter, because both OS4 and
MOS have the same problem - they are bound to a single kind of hardware.
That is why it is arguable whether either of them will achieve more than
token success.
The pro-PPC lobby is happy to have these discussions because it distracts
away from the real argument, that is, from x86. The pro-PPC lobby has
repeatedly failed to justify any of its "arguments" for PPC, and to
further cover up this embarrasing (for them) issue, it encourages threads like
these to distract people's minds with irrelevant details.
Whether MOS or OS4 gets the bigger slice of the dozens of buyers,
is irrelevant because non-mainstram hardware is unlikely to bring the
influx of new users that AmigaOS needs to grow. Survival isn't enough.

PS.
The pro-PPC lobby usually replies with something like: "Wait for OS5, that will
be x86". To which I say: show me a link. And even if that was true, that
means your PPC hardware will be obselete, or at least, a temporary stopgap, and
definately, rather pointless.
_If_, OS5 is duel-platform then the fragmentation of the market
that the pro-PPC lobby talks about so much WILL happen if OS5 does indeed run
on both platforms. Furthermore, with there being doubts that OS4 will raise
the userbase enough for commercial developers to return, it means that OS5, if
the duel-hardware story is true, would be splintered into very tiny pieces.
Once again, my OS5 comments are speculation, nobody seems to know what it is.
I wouldn't usually bother commenting on it, except I guarentee that many
replies to this post will give it as the solution to everything. So I'm just
being defensive in advance and ask people to stick to what has actually been
said and is viewable today. |
