the next ppc amiga : Comment 353 of 359 | ANN.lu |
Posted by Nowee on 21-May-2002 20:12 GMT | In reply to Comment 346 (DaveW): Dear Dave.
So you interpret my thoughts as if the only solution were using PC motherboards?
Don't you feel yourself a bit pretentious explaining everyone what I think and do?
Is the PC the only expandable solution out there for you?
As for the A1200 we were forced to patch it, the first design wasn't as good
as it could have been. Although there were an very fine design for thoose A3000
and 4000s, thoose computers were hard to find and especially expensive.
A500's used to have DIP chips that were very easy to repair, update and/or
upgrade. I just don't see the pc's as a solution. Thoose computers are boring.
If you think the best way to update a computer is to clip stuff onto it's
custom chipsets, please tell me about the AmigaOne's custom chipsets ?
You can't clip anything on a 600Mhz G3 but a fan. And it's no DIP at all. AGP is
too slow. This technology is completly outdated. Purely ridiculous.
Several years ago (3?) came the Imac, with the very same G3 @ 450 Mhz.
At the time I used to work as a demonstrator for Apple. Please let me tell you
that I'd never been impressed at all by the machine and the processor. And for
info it had Firewire, PCI, and USB built-in.
To tell the truth, I think the AmigaOne isn't an really valid solution since it
DOES NOT involve powerful alternative chipsets, and since the processor is
SURFACE MOUNTED, wich makes it a very HARD product to UPDATE. Certainly for
produtivity matters. For me it is just a raw board anybody could get anywhere.
Needless to say that most computers would yet be able to emulate this solution.
Irritating. Why would I pay so much for something I can have in any supermarket
out there?
